Equipment insurance - 11-12-2008, 01:16 PM

Just wondering, who do you use for camera insurance? I know household will cover a bit but there's usually limits for expensive items. Anyone have any recommendations?

I'm not a professional, but I have my gear insured through State Farm on a Personal Articles policy. It is VERY inexpensive and covers full replacement cost with no deductable.

I've been looking at PPA and what they have to offer.

Do a search and you will find several threads on this subject, but the best coverage for the money I have found is Marsh Affinity through PPA. $470 year for $13,000 coverage with $50 deductible.

Is the Personal Articles Policy part of you home owners policy or is it a stand alone. I have auto insurance with State Farm but nothing else.

talk to your home owners insurance about adding a rider to cover your gear.

I also use state farm as one other user posted. About 12 bucks a month for about 10k in coverage. - No deductable as stated, and they pay full invoice price. Don’t matter if your camera cost 2 grand a year ago and it’s only worth 1k today. They will pay you the full 2k (purchase price day you purchased it). I recently had some gear stolen at a park; they paid without any problems what so ever within 2 weeks.

I use Marsh Affinity. My homeowner's will not cover the gear if it is being used for a business.

It is completely seperate. NOt attached to your home owners policy at all.

Again, I am not a pro, and don't get paid for my work, but before I sold off some gear, I had $8500 of gear insured for about $130 / year.

The nice thing is that its covered for full replaced no matter what. I can drop my 1D Mk3 with an L lens on it off a tripod I knocked over with my foot, down a incline, and into a lake, and the policy would pay to replace it.

Does this cover damage as well and does it cover if the equipment is in your vehicle, house or hotel? Also, do they cover it if it's used for business purposes?

Make sure you ask all the questions as you don't want to find out you're not covered in every situation when it's too late.

The PPA insurance is worldwide and cover damage to theft to destruction by acts of war. The most complete and comprehensive coverage I've found.
