Lens Repair - Houston - 11-14-2008, 11:46 PM

Is there anywhere in town that does Lens repair? Do most places send their stuff out? I have no idea where to start. I need a lens repaired...calibrated I guess. I just wanted to see if I can get it done here and fast. Any feedback is appreciated.

My 100-400 IS lens was causing an Error message every two or three photos. I had to take the lens off the camera and put it back on and then it would take a couple more. A friend told me his did the same thing and that it was just dirty contacts. He said Canon fixed his for about $250.

I had a recommendation from someone else to go to Camera Doctor. I went to the one on Edloe and was not happy. They quoted $300 to fix my lens so I told them to go ahead.

After a few days, I called to see where they were on it and they said that it was taking so long because they were trying to find a part to keep the cost low instead of replacing the entire assembly. I told them I didn't want to wait anymore and was coming to the shop to pick it up. They told me that they couldn't give it to me that day because the owner wasn't there and I should come back in two days when he was back.

When I did get it back, it was in worse shape than when I left it. I sent it to Canon and found that they had already seen the lens. That's why Camera Doctor made me wait two days. They had sent it to Canon and didn't even have it when I wanted to pick it up. It ended up costing me a little over $800 to fix it. The zoom wouldn't move smoothly and the Image Stabilizer was ruined when I got it back.

I guess I could have taken them to court, but it was just my word against his.

I will always send my lenses straight to Canon from now on. They are very fast and easy to deal with.

Patti
