UTA's Photography Program - 11-20-2008, 02:45 AM

Does anyone on here have experience with the school's photography program?

I'm trying to decide where I want to end up and this seems to be a nice school and I could stay local. With that said I haven't really heard much about it from anyone.

Really any information as far as photography programs and colleges would be very appreciated. If you have something to say on the matter I'm all ears.

I've took two classes with their photography program while I was in school there. I enjoyed the teachers. However, it is very hard to get into the classes above the second photography class unless you are within the degree program, I believe. The two professors that I had, Bryan Florentin and Andrew Ortiz, were a lot of fun and had great assignments. I've heard great things about Kenda North too.

I took darkroom 1 with Bryan Florentin and really enjoyed the class. The program looks solid in terms of equipment, space, and faculty. I don't think you will find much better within the metroplex.

I looked at UNT but it really is a art program with some photography sprinkled in from what I can tell and what people in the program have told me.

That is reassuring to hear about UTA though. Thanks for the input.

In this area, the best are probably the photography program at Collin County Community College (Plano) and at Texas A & M Commerce (east of Dallas). That said, you will find good classes at other schools, too, including UT Arlington.

I read about the program at Commerce and it seems to be pretty good but I hadn't really heard anything about it from anyone else.

I didn't go through their program, but I've taught with people who have, and known others who have. It's supposed to be very good, teaching both practical and fine arts knowledge.

Check into UNT. The program has probably grown since I was there. It has a large journalism (including photojournalism) department and, separately, a gigantic art program including photography. I'm sure it's changed a lot since some of my old professors retired, but still has a reputation as one of the best.

As for journalism, although that market is shrinking in many ways, you would find that there is a huge network of working professionals with connections to UNT. That's how I got my first couple of full-time staff jobs, that and the fact I'm awesome.
