Maybe Canon went broke overnight? Whatever you do... be careful, stay safe and stay inside there will be mass photographer hysteria and looting of camera shops by nightfall.

I hope it wasn't Global Fulfillment. They still have my SanDisk rebate.

I've always despised rebates...It's my contention that if the company wants to increase sales by lowering prices, just do it...Don't make the consumer work harder to buy your product...The "instant rebate" is something I have no problem with, I look at it as a temporary sale price...
That said, I bit on two rebates earlier this year and can happily report I received both last week from SanDisk and Bogen...Ben

i'm going to say that canon probably outsources the rebate redemption programs - so I don't think this is a canon thing. (crossing fingers)
on the other hand, I wouldn't mind getting my grubby hands on some L lenses at a fire sale.

The rebates I've taken advantage of from Canon are instant rebates, so nobody gets hurt!

The rebates work to get people into stores to buy. I was once read that only about 20% of the people acutally submited the rebate forms. In the long run it is a true money generator.
Personally, if you want to discount a product then due so. I hate rebates but I will submit the forms if a rebate is offered.

no, the rebate company they use specifically for printers and some other item went bankrupt. Canon has asked people not to cash the checks until they've worked out the kinks, but you will get your money back.

Companies offer rebates because they see it as a way of putting things on sale without actually discounting the item.. if only 25% of people actually go through the effort of filing for the rebate correctly, that means there are 75% of the purchases that they didn't have to discount... plus they get the bounce from the "sale." Hate 'em all you want, but they make for good business practice for the companies as long as those 20-30% numbers hold out.
