Anyone switch from DirecTV to FIOS TV??? - 11-25-2008, 11:36 AM

So I've been a loyal DirecTV customer since early 2000, but I'm thinking of switching to FIOS TV when it becomes available in my area.

Wonder if anyone else has made the switch and what their thoughts are.

My biggest thing is that I'm a Home Media NUT, so I'm looking for like minded opinions.

I have all HD through out the house, and I do a lot of media streaming as well.

I had the original HD Tivo, which I loved. I reluctantly made the switch to the DirecTV HD DVR's and I do admit that I love them a little better than Tivo. I do miss Tivo suggestions, and some of the other interface options, but all in all the DirecTV DVR service has been a nice change.

I also find the On-Demand choice to be great, and I love the built in Network connectivity. It allows me to stream my movies, music, and pictures directly through the DVR box. Works great for being able to stream my kiddo movie collection to any room.

Sooooooo, with all that love why would I want to switch???

Well, for one, my new house on a heavily wooded lot with 68 Trees. Getting a good signal wasn't as hard as I thought, but I've noticed some drops when the wind picks up. Not to mention the already annoying rain fades.

2nd, I currently have Time Warner for Phone/Internet. I'll be switching to FIOS internet for sure, which means I'll likely switch my phone, which really puts me in a position to look for a bundled service.

If their TV service is at least AS good as directv, then I really have no reason not to switch if it'll save me a few dollars here or there.

So with that, I'd love to hear from some people that made a similar switch.

The picture quality on FIOS is hard to beat. Plus, with cable cards, you can start use the TiVO HD.

What sucks is that you have to rent the boxes. That adds up each month.

I noticed that. It looked like the service was pretty cheap, then I saw that they want $20 per month for their Media box, and $15 per month for an HD DVR.

Considering I have HD in 3 rooms now, that might be a tough sell.

Unless you are in an existing Verizon wireline territory or select areas of Allen, Bartonville, Colleyville, Double Oak, Flower Mound, Frisco, Grapevine, Keller, Plano and Watauga that not Verizon, you may have a long wait. They are only going near out of franchise in those areas right now for FiOS.

Fios Tv - 11-25-2008, 02:37 PM

I work for Verizon. Detonate last time I checked Arlington, TX is not in or going to be a fios area. Don't get me wrong the say there going to move into other non Verzion areas but there still building out Verzion footprint . But to get back to your question. I think the SD picture looks great and the HD picture even better. By the time all the updates get out, you will be able to stream HD content to any HD set top box in the house to any computer and your music and pictures, and use your cell phone to program your dvr if you forget.

I've moved. I'm in Colleyville now. And they are currently running lines in our area. I don't know how long that means it's going to be until it's available, but they have already been through our yard digging holes, breaking our sprinkler, and putting giant access boxes....

Hey Jim, you moved closer to me! Well actually, I'm in the ghetto town to the west of you

I'm going to try FIOS as soon as I can. They are jacking up my yard right now.
Would love to hear from people who have had both.

I am switching from DISH TV to no TV. I am serious because I hardly watch TV. Also, I am not willing to spend thousands of dollars buying new flat screen TV. I have 4 tubed televisions in my house. I can use the money to purchase more camera equipments!

My son switched from Charter to FIOS and he really like it very much.

We switched from DirecTV to FiosTV and have been satisfied. There are some issues however. Here is a list:

1. Sometimes programs just don't record that are set.
2. Sometimes the recording starts about 5 minutes into the program for no apparrant reason.
3. The stated capacity of the DVR is not as high as they state on the website (at least, it was before they updated the software on the DVR, now it appears to use less compression, so the record time is significantly less).
4. Random reboots for no reason of the DVR which will interrupt recording. The recording does pick back up, but sometimes it splits the show up.

There are other issues that I've read online from different people, but that is the list that has been affecting our service.

Other than that, we are happy with the service. The picture quality of standard def is great, the high def is outstanding. My only complaint feature-wise is that the description of the shows don't show 'pilot' or 'repeat'.

I didn't realize you could use a Tivo box with FIOS.

If that is true, then this may truely be the best of all worlds.
Cheaper, Better Picture, No Rain Fades, and THE RETURN OF MY BELOVED TIVO!!!!
