External HD Recovery - 11-25-2008, 08:22 PM

I have an external hard drive that is making a funny noise, like the motor is not quite connecting or whatever, and now it's not showing up on my computer. Most of the images are backed elsewhere, but some of them were just put on and have not been back up yet. I went to PPA website, and on there it says you get a 20% discount from a particular company. So, I called the company, and with my discount, it's still $3150. I also have a call into PPA's attorney about my indemnification trust, but I haven't heard back from them as of yet. Does anyone happen to know of a company that can recover images from an external hard drive, 1.5 terrabyte, single drive, for less than $3150?? I simply cannot afford that. Thanks!

I sent Leslie a pm on this, but wanted to put this info on here so I can hopefully find it easily if it is needed again.

Mark Taylor in Dallas (taylormark.com) has helped me and a couple of my friends with data recovery for a reasonable price.

I sent Leslie his info, so hopefully she will update with how it all works out....

may sound silly, but connect it to a different computer! A lot of tomes it's a computer problem not a drive problem.

Thanks, Rod, for the info. Of course, I already did this in a pm. I took it in today to Mark. He seems very knowledgeable; so, we will find out. I will let everyone know. Also, I talked to the attorney at PPA. They will pay up to $1900 with a $200 deductible if you send it to a person of your choice. They actually only pay $1700 if you send it into the company they recommend on their website, and their price was $3900. So, it's a better deal to find someone else, as long as they know what they are doing. Mark's prices are very reasonable. I shouldn't end up paying more than my $200, or possibly just a bit more depending on how difficult it is.

Never thought about that, Gordon. I should have tried it. Couldn't have hurt.

I had a similar circumstance a month ago. I took it to the local computer gurus and they moved what they could onto a new drive. I couldn't recover any pictures.
Make sure they understand exactly what you want and exactly how you'd like to be able to access the data later, if they can recover it.
