What to see in/around Reno? - 12-08-2008, 11:15 PM

My husband has work in Reno this weekend and I get to tag along. We are not gamblers so I'd like to take in the sights. We will have most of the day Friday together and I will have Saturday and Sunday to myself while he works. I don't mind going it alone (depending on area), or even driving some distance. I would like to see some of your pictures of the area if you have some, just to see what I'm in for.

Thanks,

Lana

The most popular area near Reno is Lake Tahoe. Rent a car and take a drive. Plan on taking all day to complete the trip because, not only is it a fairly long drive, it is beautiful.

Virginia City is an old silver mining area east southeast of Reno. Also worth spending most of a day visiting.

Thanks Tim. I was thinking Lake Tahoe, but wasn't sure if I wanted to take the drive alone. Virginia City sounds pretty cool.

Again thanks for the tips.

How can you go to Reno and NOT drive around Lake Tahoe? The lake is gorgeous. If the weather cooperates (and there are definitely times it does NOT), drive around the entire lake and take as much time as you want - it could easily be an all day trip. There are places all around where you can stop. My favorite, by far, is Emerald Bay, which is on the south side of the lake. There is a little island in the middle. We've been several times - staying both on the north and south shores of the lake and I never get tired of seeing it. If you are a skier, there are many resorts where you could get a day of skiing in. Heavenly has the most beautiful views of the lake and it's the only place I've been where I've skied from one state to another, as the resort sits atop the Calif/Nevada state line. It's odd seeing desert off to one side and mountains and the lake off to the other. Since it's on the south side, it's farther to get to than other resorts, though.

I don't have any Tahoe images here at work, but just do a search on Flickr for plenty of images around the lake.

Thanks everyone. I had a nice but cooped up time in Reno. We got there on Friday afternoon, and we were going to take the trip to the lake but the weather was not good, 100mph winds kept us in. We woke up Saturday morning to ice, so no traveling for me. Sunday was better later in the day, but it was fairly late so really no time to "go" anywhere. Monday we were up early, to about 3" of snow!! So no time to see anything, spent the morning getting to the airport, with our flight delayed about 2 hours. But all in all it was a nice get away just me and my husband, even though he was there to work.

Thanks again,

Lana
