iPhone and texting question - 12-09-2008, 12:29 PM

What is considered a 'text' message?

My data plan has 200 texts per month. I'm not a huge text person. I might send 50-80 per month. Much to my surprise AT&T says I've sent 152 so far this month. I still have 9 days left on my billing cycle before my text messages rest to 200.

a text message isn't determined by the size or content. It is determined by the SEND button. 1 letter or 1000 words, it is all one text message.

Does it also include received? deleted without reading still counts. Spam counts.

If that is the case, then there is no way I could of sent and recieved that many. I was wonder if posting to Facebook counted as a text message. If so, then the number seems right.

200 is sent and received, not just sent

I think you're just under estimating what you've done. Check out the data tab on your account online and it will show you all the numbers you've sent/received messages to/from this month.

usually apps like AIM and Facebook etc are data unless they specify in the details that they are a text message based app

I would bet that your facebook stuff is a text message (unless it is a blackberry and you are using that data plan). Also, SMS messages (text messages) are limited to 200 characters. If you send something longer than that it is usually counted as multiple text messages.

It's really easy to lose track of the text messages on the iPhone. I think it's partial to the text message feature is alot like iChat or AIM. It's more like a chat log than texting.

yeah

I like it for that reason. I'm actually willing to text now. I used to hate texting, and to be honest I'm still not a HUGE fan of it, but it's better than it was before.

MediaNet is the data access. All data access shows up via MediaNet. (I wish they'd drop that stupid name.)

Multi-Media text messages will count against data usage and txt message, as far as I can tell, on the IPhone.

I do have the facebook app. it's much easier than opening Safari and navigating to their website.

Amy - thank for the info. All this iPhone stuff is still so new to me.

I have the iPhone 3G and I use the Facebook. This does not count as TXT. The only think as others suggest counts as TXT is when you send or receive using the SMS app on the iPhone.

I can't remember the name, but there was one IM app that did use TXT as the transport layer, but it does not sound like you are using that.

If you look at your bill, it will tell you all the numbers you sent and received TXT from.

Actually a text message is limited by size, the max length for a text message is usually 160 characters, anything above 160 is broken up into sepearate messages and charged as more than 1 message. Some carriers don't support sending a message above 160 characters as multiple messages to other subscribers. Typically you would see something that says the message has been truncated if that happens.

Here is at&t's text messaging info
