Updated landline service - 12-09-2008, 01:35 PM

I just got off the phone with AT&T working on adjusting my phone bill. With the current pricing and canceling the special long distance charge (use my cell phone for that), I will now pay $30 less per month. Might want to check with your provider as they may be able to save you some money as well. Trim the fat.

I've thought about dropping the LL, but I need DSL. I'm not sure they'll let me cancel the phone service but keep the DSL.

as part of my uverse package I re-examined my phone services. I had them pull all long distance off (again cell phones), it is a straight line with only the "maintenance" charge on there. 30 bucks after taxes and fees etc. I'd cancel the land line if it wasn't for the fact that it's a number my ex-wife has and I can't track her down, and if I could I still wouldn't give her my cell phone number

Thanks, Roy. Actually, dropping the LD service was my idea, but the CS woman suggested we take a look at my phone plan. It was then that an adjustment was made. She's one of the best CS agents I've ever dealt with at ATT.

I am seriously considering dumping mine. I have mine through TWCable.. But my business line is through Vonage. I pay like $18 per month (including tax) for 500 min local and LD anywhere in N/A ($25 for unlimited). Time Warner at first was a good deal, but they pretty much have lost me as soon as I get a game plan together. Darn increases over the past year have sealed their fate with me.

I was thinking of just using Vonage only...but have yet to figure out how to wire my security alarm into the darn thing.

Congrats John.

The only reason we have our land line is the DSL (AT&T). We can't make long distance calls out from it, which does save some money.

I had heard a rumor that it's possible to drop phone service while keeping DSL, but that sounds almost too good to be true. Only calls we get on our land line are from unsolicited salespeople and my wife's grandmother.

We got rid of our land line in 2003. We told everyone about the change and people thought we were crazy. I could not figure out why I had to spend that $85 a month. So we dumped MaBell. I use cable for broadband Internet. I do have a business Tel-a-Branch phone number that I forward to my cell. It cost $26 per month.

Now my 85 year old dad has dumped his land line. His cell is over 6 years old but he finally moved to the 21st century.

How is this possible? I have had this landline number for a little over 2 years. Before me it was a meat wholesaler. I still get calls from people trying to sell me bulk chicken or asking if I am hiring meat cutters! (Too many jokes.....)
If I could dump it and keep DSL that would be GREAT.

Dropping the land line and keeping DSL is likely on a per provider basis. I had Verizon FiOS -- phone, internet, TV -- and lived it. Then I started getting bills for $300 per month for basic services. Dropped them cold! I tried just removing phone server but with Verizon you need phone to get internet.

I will not recant the story here but everything worked out in the end. I even got some money back. -G
