This is a pretty awesome story, in my opinion: A photographer, the White House, and a smashed SD card: A data-salvaging saga.

Parts of I wanted to laugh out loud, because with my luck, that would happen to me. But it is interesting, and it's nice to know that there is help for this type of situations. I wonder if anyone has had to use the service

a bit lower tech (and showing my age) but i once removed the media from a floppy (3.5") with a broken case and placed it in another's case to salvage the files on the original media. it worked.

Same situation happened to me but it did not break in my hands. It was a hardware failure IN the card. It would no longer work after I had finished taking images at a wedding. I always use professional grade cards, not the $30 kind and here is the reason. If you ever have ANY failure of the card all I have to do is send it to the manufacturer and they disassemble it, put the chips back together, recover the data and send it to me on disc. Guess the price . . . $0. Thats right if you buy a professional grade card they stand behind it at least at Lexar.

Interesting. The only card I have had fail on me ever has been a Lexar.

Wasn't aware of their free data recovery service... But there wasn't anything major on that card and it's been several years ago.

Now with SD cards.. I pretty much hate the build quality and have experienced breakage in the spacers (between pins) on all sorts of brands. Not a big fan of SD.
