National Geo Cancels Photo Seminar - 12-17-2008, 01:38 PM

Interesting take on the cancellation. National Geo says it was cancelled due to "many factors", while the photographers are saying it is in protest to the National Geo's new contract.

blaming "the economy" in any way, shape or form is a joke. Print media, even NatGeo, has been declining for years, even thru the boom times prior to this recent hickup.

Print media, whether you like it or not, is dying off. People think of newspapers, but magazines are being included as well.

If National Geographic is losing business, then they need look no further than in the mirror. If anyone has perused the pages recently they would notice a decided lack of truly fine photos and quality. In print they can't even compete with Texas monthly.

Have you looked in a Texas Highways lately? I could only pray that my photos look like some of the stuff in that magazine.

My 'edit photos' says no; but because there is no "sometimes" option.

You are right and I second the sentiment. Wonder how many people really ever look at that magazine...not nearly as much advertisements as a Texas Monthly. How much do you think Willie Nelson pays them?

National Geo really shot themselves in the foot when they screwed over so many long time photogs by using images that were sold for to them for print and then turning around later and publishing them on CD sets they sold but not further compensating the photogs. Alot of lawsuits came out of that, and the results went both ways, with alot of photogs running from them in droves unless they became better compensated. That's the fight that is still ongoing.

Several of the mainstay photographers, in telephone conversations with this photographer, told him that they were not going to participate in the January event and that in response Geographic had cancelled the program.
Contract problems persist, as NGM tries to bleed photographers dry.
But, why not, when there are a million photographers out there who would pay NGM to get a photo in the magazine ?

To be replaced with what? A computer screen? Boy, I hope not. I'd much rather sit back with a good printed book or magazine than sit here staring at a bunch of pixels every time I need or want to read something.

like film, it will always be around as long as there is a market. But it will be harder to find and the selection may suffer.
