bump is when you purposefully reply to a thread...to make it appear "new" again...so you bump it..

If I am selling an item and no one has responded to my thread, I might respond to it myself to keep the thread "fresh" and at the top of the for sale list. This is "bumping".

The one I don't understand is mostly in the B&S forum...It seems most of the unread posts always read, "PM sent"...Is there a purpose to announcing that you've sent a PM other than building a post count?...Since the threads open and close so slowly, why not just send the PM and wait for an answer instead of cluttering a thread?...

Just trying to understand...Ben

I sometimes do this to try to discourage other buyers from getting in on the action.....
If I see several PM sent messages I might assume the item is sold.

Posting "PM Sent" also serves as a way to establish "dibs" and is a backup in case the PM system fails (which I've never heard of happening).

That, or everyone else does it, so we do it too...

I thought that's why the date and time was attached to all the PM's......Ben

I lost out on this deal in the B&S forum, because while I was posting the message "PM sent", someone else was actually sending a PM.

So the lesson of the day, is to send the PM first, and then post a message saying that you sent a PM.

Or just send the PM and get carbon credits for not wasting the internet with superfluous posts......Ben

Now that's funny.

If I put "PM sent" it's because I want the author to check their PMs and know that I've replied. I've missed out on deals before where I've sent PMs and not responded to the thread. The author checked the thread before checking their PM's and ended up promising the item to another person.

I know I have it set up on TPF to get notified when I receive a PM, but not all of the message boards I have been a member of has that feature available. So it's force of habit for me now.
