Question HD Video Camcorders - 12-29-2008, 02:02 AM

We have a Sony HandyCam DCR-HC40. It's about 5 years old and still works pretty good. The one thing I hate about it nowadays...it uses mini DV tapes. Which means I have a huge stack of tapes in my closet that are not converted to a video file that we can watch on our computer or stand alone DVD player. Also to store a backup copy on our storage server.

In the past we've use our Sony to record our children and family events. So we're not looking for anything professional. In fact, we're looking for convince and decent video quality. Many of the HD camcorders record in mov or mpeg on to a SD or SDHC card. This sounds right up my alley! I started looking around for an inexpensive HD video camcorder and found these at B&H.

DXG-569v

DXG-595V

I like to hear from anyone that owns or used one of these camcorders.

Man! I am looking for one too but there are so many options. I want to find one that has manual settings but when I read the specs they don't provide much detail.

I did just buy a $100 standalone DVD recorder and have started to transfer my tapes to DVD.

I just snagged a Sony SR11 HS Camcorder which has a 60GB HDD built in. No tapes, no discs, very handy. Records to AVCHD which seems to be becoming the prevailing HD format. The SR11/12 and CX11 use a higher resolution sensor than the SR10 and are worth the extra $$. The CX11 records directly to Memory Stick instead of HDD, and is very light.

Rob - I'll take a look at that one.

Keith - That's way more than I intend to spend. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Sonny,
Try video maker magazine. And look at this website that I was reading a few days ago. It has lots of info:
