POY - How do you decide? - 01-02-2009, 03:32 PM

I'm going through my images from 2008 to enter a few in the TPF Picture Of The Year contest and as always, I'm having a difficult time picking out what I think would do well. Do I pick what "I" like or what I "think" other viewers are going to like?

I was wondering how YOU selected the image(s) that you did or are going to enter?

And if you're not going to enter, why not?

Joe

PS. Please do not post any POY images for 2008 here.

I pick what I was happiest about. I said after last year I wasn't going to enter, since it seems my tastes are not similar to a lot of peoples, but I may give it another shot.

I also pick what I like best and what I'm proudest of. It may not be what everyone else likes, but that's okay. I can feel good about putting forth what I think of as my best effort.

I'm not entering because of the EXIF info requirement.

Are you shooting film or slides? If so, I think you can tell Abel that and still enter.

Post-processing strips all the EXIF info from my final images. Might be due to the fact I'm using ten-year-old software. I do keep (most of) the original images (unles old timers' hits me and I hit the wrong button).

That's what I've done in the past (entered "MY" favorites). I was thinking about doing something different this year and entering what I think other's might be drawn to, see if I have the capability to guess what other's might like...

Dunno. I have a bunch selected but whittling it down is really tough. I despise having to choose my own work which is probably why TPF's is the only contest I enter each year....

Dave - sorry you're not going to be able to enter this year. Shame about the EXIF info getting scratched.

Joe

If I can find the time to process images I will enter. That said, I pick what I like. So far I've had consistent results by doing that

I have several basic image editors...Gimp, Irfanview, and (ugh) Photobase that retain EXIF info after editing...I might scrounge up something to throw into the pot. But I did a test (using Gimp, I think) on one after just a simple resize, posted it on my site, but EXIF info was still lost.

I try to post a favorite each week to my blog.. so I already had it narrowed down to 52 or so... after that, I used a combination of both.. my favorites weighed with what client's liked weighed with what I think other photographers would like. (Those last two are sometimes very different.)

In other words.. it was a pain in the butt. LOL

You have a lot of good ones. Hard to choose one. The kid on floor with nascar cars was really nice.

I go through my photos and judge them against Joe Lorenzinis photos. So!!
I'm only entering one this year and I'm going to offer him a bribe to stay out of that category !!
