Actually, I think it looks kind of cool. Of course, I don't know if that's because it really DOES look cool, or just because it's different.

As ugly as the stupid silver rebels.

I am not real sure why someone would get that over a entry level Nikon or Canon. It really baffles me.

Panasonic is offering the G1 in blue and red in addition to traditional back.

Why get white? Nikon has been making gold cameras (along with Leica and many others) for years, heck there's a gold-accented D60.

http://www.cameraquest.com/nffagold.htm

http://www.ritzcamera.com/product/SLR1193.htm?bct=t1134

The silver rebel has always been an identifier with consumer-ish cameras. The silver was non-threatening and not "too serious" for people making the jump from a P&S, in a swift glance it said "hey I'm here for business, but I can party too" while the remaining affordable.

It's the idea of "freak" marketing - make an item that is so different from everything else, people will want to buy it just on the premise that is different from everything else. Remember the iMac G3 line up when Apple made the jump from "generic computer part beige" to translucent colors? Well they began to apply that idea to everything, further effecting the Powermac line. Then everyone else was making color-accented computers (i.e. eMachines), Apple moves onto another extreme, "white" with their iMac G4 lines, that carried into the next generation and through the eMac. Or the first couple of P&S's that came in "fun flavored colors?" Many people will purchase an item because it's different or it looks "cool" and stands out. Maybe this'll be a collectible down the road, others will just shop smarter. Frankly the Ford model of colors will always win me over, "The Customer Can Have Any Color He Wants So Long As It's Black"

I've got a Canon Elan II that helped bring back the silver/black thing, but to me it's a lot prettier than the silver Rebels and DigiRebels that followed years after. I bought the Elan II because it fit the features and price I needed, though, not because it was silver. Another difference is the Elan II's silver is actually metal rather than metal-colored plastic.

I like the white Pentax. Both my parents have Pentax digital SLRs, and they are very solid entry-level bodies. I've got a feeling my mom will get camera envy with it, although it might scare away some of the wildlife she enjoys shooting!

Silver rebels shout "entry level", that's why I went for the black. Wanted it to look more expensive if I was going to drop the money for it. :)
