Anyone using Windows 7... - 01-10-2009, 02:17 PM

I skipped Vista and will most likely move to Windows 7 when it comes out. Microsoft has made chosen it's direction and I'm either going to need to adapt or stay with XP until it becomes obsolete.

Going with or skipping Vista was an educated decision based on my current workflow and needs. Going to Windows 7 will be no different. Vista lost out, Windows 7 will most likely not. The reasons for going Mac are very clear to me but it is not an option and a completely different thread (start it if you want, I'm not going to).

Is anyone running Windows 7 and if so, are you finding any compatibility issues with any software programs (digital imaging software especially!).

Any overall impressions in regards to XP are helpful as well.

Thanks!

Joe

Haven't read much about Win7 so I don't even know what it brings to the table that I just gotta have. I just moved to Vista this past spring and haven't had any problems. However, you shouldn't have any problems with sticking with XP since it's going to be around at least through 2012 (according to what our Microsoft TAM told us at work).

Windows seven so far looks like Vista with some advancements.....most-likely it probably has Microsofts touch technology built in so that it will be a little more seemless for people to migrate to a touch based computer.....

Vista was supposed to have these upgrades....however, since it has been given such a bad wrap.....I think it is smart for microsoft to package the software better and put in all the bug fixes it should have been done for Vista....

On a personal note...I have not really had any issues with Vista...we converted to vista in Nov-Dec 2007 and everything has been working well...but I did take out all of the vendor software that I found on it...and then I went thru the internet and downloaded all the driver updates....and installed them....We have 6 computers for the office and did this for all 6....then I made sure all the computers had atleast 2gigs of ram....and we have not had any issues (knocking on wood three times).....

However for my home computer I do use....MAC.....LOL

I have no issues with Vista, it just wasn't for me. I had it loaded and used it for 3 months before reverting back (happily) to XP. My issues with it were purely usability from a photography workflow standpoint (that and drivers).

I'm fairly well up to date on what Windows 7 will be bringing to the table and how much in common it has with Vista. I also know many of the adjustments I'll have to make going from XP to W7 (especially from a power-user's point of view).

What I'm curious about is how stable the beta is and how anyone feels about the current release. I'm most likely going to load it up on my staging machine and try it out for a bit.

I'll report back.

Joe

I am done playing latest and greatest with Microsoft. What I have now works and I will continue using it until I no longer can. At that point, I will make an upgrade of some sort... and maybe by that time, I will no longer have to worry about backward compatibility with software so even a platform switch won't be out of the question. (To date, I have been unable to switch to another platform because I was still supporting software written for the Windows platform.. that, I suspect, will have gone away completely sometime in the next year... at that time, whatever platform is the best and most affordable will be where I go.)

I am glad you started this because I remember reading somewhere that the new Windows will be Vista with a new name for marketing purposes. Vista had so many issues and problems that they thought the new release should use a new name altogether and stay away from using the Vista name. Most consumers will think it is different but I am not sure if Microsoft would be able to completely change their program in just a couple of years.

I still use XP Pro and will until it is no longer supported oruntill a new operating system just blows the doors off of anything else.

I'm running XP64 and love it. Bought a new machine this past Spring that had Vista and after only a week, wiped the hard drive and started over with XP64. I tend to agree with Lonnie. What else could MS bring to their operating system in just a couple of years?

I haven't used 7 yet. I tried to download it for hours yesterday and finally gave up. I'm really interested in getting to a 64bit OS. Can anyone say MEMORY! 16 terabytes which translates right know into unlimited memory unlike the 3/4 gb memory limit of 32bits OS's.

YES. That plus the new i7 cores should be freakin awesome.

Anyone else excited?

I will more than likely make a jump to it... Right now I am on XP64bit which I like. However, it doesn't make use of my GPU's OpenGL capabilities. That is annoying and somewhat effects the performance gains I got by going 64bit over my previous 32bit with OpenGL support.

Really. I tried 64bit XP but didn't like it. Maybe I'll give it another try. I am concerned with my 32bit applications working on a 64 bit OS. Any issues or gotchas?

I have had zero issues...minus the OpenGL support. Nice to be able to run 8GB of RAM... My main reason for using it.

I run 64-bit Vista on a PC with 8 Gb of memory and a quad core processor and I am pretty happy with it, with all my digital workflow tools running superfast. On location I carry a Mac laptop, which I love. While I don't have problems with the Vista machine, I plan to move to a full Mac workflow in about a year, so I'll probably never use a Windows 7 for photography. Again, not a problem using Vista, but I prefer the awesome quality and user experience of the Mac.
