My night in the county - 01-12-2009, 02:35 AM

As many of you know I have started to work for a local Sheriff's Office. Last night was a typical night...

Calls:

#1) caller stated there is a dog on their porch that doesn't belong to them and won't let them leave. Hmmm... what to do? A call to the Corporal and a ham sandwhich later, the dog is off the porch.

#2) family disturbance. Dad kicks in the door of his 30 something year old daughter; dad can destory his house if he wants to and didn't harm or threaten anyone so mom and daughter go away for the night.

#3) caller in the same neighborhood as #1 calls to say there are wolves at her back fence trying to get to her dogs. I'll be da*ned, there are wolves in the area, but they were gone when we arrived. Good thing, no more ham sandwhiches.

#4) spot a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot of a closed body shop. Driver actually lives in the body shop and is waiting for someone who owes him $100 to bring the cash by. I hope we didn't scare off his debtor.

#5) shots fired call so me, one of the SWAT officers and the Corporal do a house to house search in a really bad trailer park while my FTO waits in the car. Some good entry practice, but what a rat trap neighborhood it was. Trailers that weren't livable with dilapidated garages and storage sheds to go through. 1 hour later, no more gun shots and no suspect, except the poor kid the SWAT guy detained when he first go there. The Crimson Trace laser grip on my .45 got some good use.

Then there were the typical alarm calls and spot checking homes, etc. and dinner.

All of this while handling 2 beats of about 500 square miles.

Hah! Wait till you fall though the floor of a trailer. I spent saturday afternnon and night looking for a Capital murder suspect. We finally got him. He shot three people, one fatally, two are still holding on.

I remember those nights on patrol, have you had your first "cow" call, where you have to herd some cattle back into a fence? FTO= Field Training Officer.

Sounds like fun, I know here in Grimes County they get Reeeeeeeally bored sometimes at night. Our local paper publishes a Sheriff's report of all the calls they get in. Here is a link for comedic purposes. http://www.navasotaexaminer.com/arti...ews/news09.txt I always find it funny when law enforcement in the city has no idea what to do with livestock that get out. I guess a rope isn't standard gear in the trunk in the city. Is your FTO riding you pretty hard?

Maybe they were just those big coyotes from Holly's thread.

Back home in Indiana, we once had some stock that had been brought in for a Rodeo get loose in the middle of downtown. I guess you have heard of the old saying "bull in a china store," one large bull evaded police for over 24 hrs.

Tomorrow I work with the Warrant/Fugitive Unit. That's what I did for 2 years when I was on the job in CA. It will be interesting to see if it all comes back to me. So far, it's like riding a bike, except for the geography and different call types.

No cows yet, but I did get a horse a couple of days ago. Corralled it in a neighbors yard.

No. So far everyone knows I have quite a bit of experience in the mean streets of CA and they are taking a different approach, not like I'm right out of the academy. So far so good.

I would imagine that they are happy to get someone they don't have to
start from scratch with. Street smarts are only learned from putting in the time.
Best of luck in a new/old career.

Denton Co. lets you carry .45 ACP? Dallas county "thinks ooooh, big scarry gun. Use this pea-shooter 9mm instead." I think Dallas Co. options are 9mm, .40 and .357 Sig. Oh, and the old standard issue .38. They are allowed to carry a .357 Mag pistol but must only load with .38s.

We can carry anything we can qualify with (almost), including a rifle.

Former deputy in WilCo (local) up until about 2 years ago (last time I spoke to him) qualified with and carried single action revolvers. They were .38Spc, but I forget the make/model.

Wow! I wouldn't want to see him in a gun battle with those.

Ol' Bob Munden does OK with a single action revolver. And his ego is pretty strong too.
