How many of you play guitar? - 01-12-2009, 11:12 AM

Had a small twitter exchange yesterday where Shelby Lane and I were noticing that quite a lot of us photographers also play guitar. It got me to wondering what kind of creative connection might exist between the visual and musical. Maybe it's just that creative people are drawn to photography and music as well. No matter the reason, I'm interested to see the numbers!

I've played at guitar for a long time, but have actually been taking lessons over the last year and finally actually know what I'm doing (even if I can't always do it well.) Who else?

I had started learning guitar about 4 years ago, and still have the guitar, but have not picked it up except to dust since I took up photography. I do sing, and have since I was a kid, and at one time had about a 2 1/2 octave range (in HS). Now I just sing cuz I like it!

I play one thing on classical guitar, but then my fingers hurt.
I play one thing on the piano and then my ears hurt.

I play trumpet HERE
Used to play with THESE GUYS for ten years.

My trumpet cost more than my cameras..and has made me more money !

There are more and more teachers who will teach you by a new method that will teach you to ad lib what you are playing. You don't learn to read music, or any of the classical stuff. They teach you chords and how to improvise a melody around the chords. Very satisfying if you just want to sit down and make music.

Alex, I was wondering if you were going to start this or if I should. I have had a guitar since college and took a class way back when, but I hardly ever take it out. I've decided that 2009 is going to be the year that I actually practice.

I also played alto sax in jr high/high school and piano in elementary school.

Yep, guitars as well as just about anything else with strings on it. I play in a couple bands around here, but you know, this is Austin, so doesn't everyone?
Violin (fiddle) is currently my main instrument.

I owned a guitar in high school, but neevr took lessons. Although I don't play, I enjoy guitar instrumentals, and have a pretty large collection, especially finger style.

I don't think there is necessarily any more connection between photographers and guitarists than there is between photographers and hunters, fishermen, quilters or anything else.
