Don't tell me about a different forum... - 01-13-2009, 04:36 PM

Okay - I'm fairly new to this industry as a profession... and alot of people tell me about this forum... or that forum.

I actually found TPF doing a google search (thank you Google Gods!).

But other photogs share forums they enjoy - and almost to a T - they all have some type of: "Don't talk about other forums" type issue in the register agreement.

Seriously?

If you do your job, as a forum/source for info, why would it matter? I don't want to have to limit what I'm telling people - if it's useful - I want to share. If I think a forum is going to help someone - I want to share it.

Am I just being a brat or does it bother you?

Perhaps the intent is to not have people "bad mouth" the other forums. That would be tacky.
I'm not aware that there is a rule about repeating what you heard on another forum.

it's usually an issue of they don't want users spamming other forums, or using their forum as a means of garnering referrals to another forum.

Some will have that in their terms of service... they don't want you sharing what you've learned there, or more importantly any actions or specials, with anyone else who is not a paid member.

thats pretty much it... to have someone troll our forum only to push and attract our members elsewhere is frowned upon.

you guys can discuss other forums, no worries..

its just when a member creates a photography forum very similar to TPF which include exact graphics, section titles, rules, layout and color schemes and then comes on here to solicit members to sign up over on that other one is when i start to get a bit upset... and yes that has happened... on more than one occasion.

you're not the first and won't be the last

copy cat forums start up all the time, and a lot of times it's from members who were disgruntled with admin and moderation on one forum so they decide to make their own forum and then come back to the old one to solicit members touting how the new one is better because it's being run differently, more laid back, less rules blah blah blah blah...can you tell I've been down this road on forums before

I wouldn't have become a member here if someone hadn't contacted me on another forum I frequent and invited me to join.

I believe I was the 17th member to join here and I wonder who invited me.

I go to a lot of forums. Mostly because I don't have a life after my wifes stroke, But I always wind up coming back to the TPF because I have made some great friends here. I don't read a lot of politics here and I don't think we're on an ego trip like some other photo forums on the Web where the pros think their better than anyone else were just photographers sharing and having fun. I Hope

Gordon

Heh, same here... although he PM'd me on that forum, I think.. so no spamming.

That forum is also long gone... was dying when Abel first hit me up and died within 6 months of my coming here.

(And the extreme case of editing is one of the "modeling" sites out there that has a web bot that automatically deletes any reference to one of their competitors.)

So we've got the "green light" to send out PM's, right? Sorry Abel, I couldn't resist.

I was referred to this forum by someone and I truly forget the person who referred me, but said this was one of the better forums, and if you needed photography help, this was the place to come, as well as just nice chats. I'm glad I'm here
