I had a lab growing up, great dog, but insisted on putting anything and everything in their mouth and gulping it down. Heard that the golden also seems to like do this. I know that they are highly active intelligent dogs, and the worse thing for you to do is let the dog figure out how to entertain themselves. Petsmart is a great idea, with the obiendence, and socialization. Both a must for any kind of dog. I ve also had German Shepards for many years, and they also shed, so when I used to look at houses, I'd first scope out the color of the carpet to see if it would hide some of the hair. I think everyone things their particular breed of dog is best, and that's how it should be. A good book is "when good dogs do bad things." covers a large variety of distructive behavior. Just keep in mind this is a life-long commitment. Good luck

I lived with a Golden for 4 years. Very sweet, beautiful, stupid dog. LOL Thought any tennis ball was his. Will chase balls for hours. But protective? Not so much. Between him and my boxer, they were absolutely worthless for even alerting us if someone came to the door. Rusty (the golden) will run and turn circles if someone comes to the gate and he's outside.

Did kill a pidgeon or two.

Corrie,
We have 2 girls and I can tell you from my standpoint they have been the best dogs I have ever owned, they instinctly know when to cheer you up and also know when something is wrong and try to make you feel better when your sick.

Yes they do shed a bit but with the furminator and the occasional bath and brush and they are fine, the only problem we have with our oldest Cassidy is Hypothyroidism which can be treated with meds other than that they can be somewhat prone to chronic ear infections at times depending on their bloodline but its well known in Goldens just because of the breed, they were SUPER easy to house train, love to please and all around some of the best dogs I think anyone can own, treat them with love and you will have their full hearts.

Here are my 2 girls Cassidy camera left @ 7 and Bailey camera right at 6.

They are the best thing that has happened to me an my wife bar none besides having kids.

You wont be disappointed.

Hey Steve,

I just saw that furminator thing-a-ma-jig at PetSmart today - does it work well and did you buy the largest one? I don't have a golden but a long haired australian shep/mix who is also a shedding machine.

Thanks so much. Cassidy and Bailey are gorgeous! The one I am looking at has been crate trained. She sleeps in there and spends the day when her owner is at work. I would like to get her used to being inside since I am home most days so that might be a challenge but I'm up for it.

I will have to grab a Furminator so I am prepared. Y'all have been so helpful.
