Fencing $ Per Foot - 01-16-2009, 12:56 PM

Did Ike take out your fence too? What did you pay per foot for replacement?

Just for reference (I'm getting a complete quote tomorrow) of $15 / ft labor + materials. HOA requires 2-rail with ceder pickets.

Thanks
Brian

Do it yourself and save the money. Ike tipped over my fence and my dad and I straightened it. All is takes is a shovel, a level, some cement and muscle to straighten a post. The rest is easy... just nailing on the pickets.

Wow Brian,

Sounds great to me. We just paid $21/sqft to a guy our neighbor (it was a group project) really pushed for cuz he was SO good. Turns out he subbed out the job :-).

They did a nice job, but would prefer YOUR price!

other tips (from a guy who's built more than a few over the years):

go beyond the 2 rails; 3 rails will prevent bowing of the pickets.

make sure all posts are in concrete at least 1', and corner and gate posts are at least 2' into concrete.

use a horizontal board on the bottom. this avoids each picket from rotting only at the bottom 6".

don't toe-nail the rails!!! this is the weakest possible joint and as the ground shifts, the joints WILL pull apart. Plus it puts the rails flat which even with 3 allows sagging, 3 rails on edge won't sag.

cedar is good....

we're having ours rebuilt, but not sure what the price is, wife handles the $$. iirc, it's a bit more than $15/foot tho. It's virtually a community effort, many of ours were Ike'd.

I lost 100' of fence during Ike. Replacing it worked out to 16.25/ft which also included a 4' gate. The fence has cedar pickets, three rails and a 2x10" pine footer. That included all the labor, materials and disposal of the old fence.

You can definitely save yourself some money if you are able to do it yourself. I have two friends who did it themselves and each spent less the $400 on materials. Though not sure how many ft they did.

Greg - I'm ok doing some repair/rebuilding, digging out cement where the posts broke off sucks and I willing to pay someone.

Deanna - did your $21 include materials?

Ahh, YES. I didn't read your post correctly. That was the total price per linear foot. Also, we have 3 rail supports.

We live in New Territory and did a 3-family replacement deal. PM me if you want the contact information. They DID do a nice job.

My suggestion... hire Ken... he obviously knows what he's talking about. *grin*

Keep in mind that repairs from Ike (including fences) are tax deductible. At least that is what I have been told.

hah!....no, i've retired from that line of work. too much heavy lifting for this old guy. In 1980 I built our fence in Hewitt, the backyard was a full 1/4 acre. The local lumber company had a sale on 1x4 cedar pickets. I ordered 1400 for the 1st order (the guy asked "you want to take those yourself?") and wound up going back for another 300 or so over the next few weeks. A couple of friends who built fences on the side set the posts (iirc, there were like 80 posts), let me help in the evenings and "consulted" on the rest of the project. It saved me a lot of $$, and they really taught me well.

I built our basket-weave fence in San Antonio by myself, that one was pretty easy. I've re-built our fence and several neighbors' fences here in Houston numerous times, wood and Houston are not a good mix......now we're paying someone much younger to do it. But he's not doing the rails on edge and he's toe-nailing.....arggghhh.

Also, are you talking 6' or 8'? That will make a big difference in price. 2 rails is fine for a 6', but you gotta have 3 rails for 8'. Make sure they use pressure treated for thebottom band board if they put one on. It should be atleast a 2x6.
