Nikon price increase February 1 - 01-16-2009, 11:15 PM

I didn't see this posted here or in the equipment thread so I thought I'd share this.

Nikon will have a 15% increase on all their bodies and 18% on all their lenses effective February 1st. If you are planning on a purchase save yourself some $.

I haven't personally confirmed this yet, but here's the link: http://www.sportsshooter.com/message...html?tid=31932

So the economy goes to crap and they raise prices? I don't think that makes sense at all.

Thom Hogan seems to think they'll raise prices on lenses, but not bodies. They won't raise the price on the D3x though, it was just released and if they wanted it at a higher price point they would have done so from the start.

It's not so much the economy, as the strength of the Yen. They're making less per camera/lens every day because the value of the Yen has been steadily going up relative to the dollar (and most other currencies).

LOL, sure it makes sense . . . they are selling less volume and in order to maintain their bottom line, they are raising prices to make up for the loss in revenue due to lower volume! ;-)

No, it doesn't make "sense", but a number of companies are doing it as their business declines.

The problem is - there are very few companies making money, so you will see a lot more of this!

I am familiar with a company (that shall remain nameless) that uses the economy "excuse" to cut back on everything and cut jobs because they are not making plan.. This means, instead of 100mil profit, they made 92mil.. Good excuse to put people out on the street if you ask me.

NOT.

It's probably not really a price increase so much as a currency adjustment owing to the weaker dollar. One would have to check prices in Japan to know for sure.
