Fort Worth Rodeo? - 01-19-2009, 01:19 PM

I am taking a day of time bank on Friday. I was thinking of heading out to the Fort Worth stock show and rodeo. I have never been in my 20 year in the DFW area. Anything worth photographing? Or should I just go to enjoy the day?

I always enjoyed rodeo day in San Angelo. -G

I guess it just depends on what it is you feel is worthwhile.

Plenty of stuff to photograph, and lots of cool people usually.

Not having attended this event before I did not know what opportunities would be presented. I might take a camera and lens along just for grins. Mostly I want to enjoy a day out. That, for me, usually includes a camera in my hands.

thanks guys. -G

Edit:
Nice series Tom. I was thinking of taking the 85mm f1.4.

Check the schedule for Friday; you might want to spring for admission to any rodeo events going on, and that would also get you on the fairgrounds. Supposed to be warm on Friday, so hopefully it will be a good time for you to go. I might make it out there myself, time permitting.

I'm probably going some day this week. It would have to be either Wed. or Fri. now that I look at my schedule.

I don't know if it the case in Fort Worth, but the rodeo used to have "slack" sessions outside of the regular show. When a cowboy is granted a re-ride or for some other reason gets to have a "do-over", they usually take place just before or just after actual show. It gives you a chance to get up close and personal with the action. (Not too close, though.)

If you ask one of the cowboys wandering around, they can probably tell you when and where they are held. At the San Antonio show, next month, the slack rounds take place at the Rose Palace, quite remote from the show arena, but real close to my house.

Don't forget night time shots of the carnival and rides. Take a tripod.

Garry Winogrand found it interesting enough to produce a book, Stock Photographs: The Fort Worth Fat Stock Show and Rodeo.

Well I made it to the Parade this past Saturday.

Not sure what the restrictions are for flash usage in the arena because it is pretty dark in there.

We have shown animals at all of the major stock shows in Texas and Fort Worth is my absolute favorite. The arena is like taking a step back in time. It is old and you are really close to the action. My son participated in the calf scramble there. The people are awesome too! I don't think they have any flash restrictions in the arena. Lot's of cool western wear on the spectators. :-) And of course the animals are great too. Try to make it through the cattle barn if you like stuff like that. I heart Fort Worth! Wish we were going this year...San Antonio in February but no Fort Worth for us this year. :-(
