to homeschool students.
How would you determine the amount to charge for something like this?
The interest is from 6-17 years of age.
I would request that they have their own cameras and atleast one that can have modes changed for intermediate level.
But would you have them purchase a book (I have a few in mind) or would you just make copies of the lessons etc...
Never done this before, but was going to do it with my kids any way so I mentioned it to someone else and then the interest grew.
TIA for any and all help

That's an interesting idea. I'd be inclined to teach form someones book. I'll have to look around and see if there is a Method available.
I'd think that $25/wk for a two hour session depending on how many students you have, in your studio, on location, both.

Thanks Tom.
There was a bit of a response and I hope to have it all figured out by Monday lol.
And then Start in March. Since we are heading to Williamsburg end of Feb.
Paul I thought it was neat too, and if I am going to be teaching my kids any way might as well help some others out too.

I don't know what the rules are for copying out of books, but I know there are rules ... so I'd guess if you go that route you might want to find out. Most books, even textbooks, have something like "this work may not be copied in whole or in part blah blah blah." Not real enforceable, but I'm always one to follow the rules.

Another way would be to find a good curriculum and adapt it yourself.

We have homeschool groups that meet in a common location once a week for various activities that wouldn't be possible in the actual home environment (i.e. biology and lab-based classes) - it's an an idea that works. It would also provide a forum for work review of your students.

Younger kids: basic composition (i.e. top of head near the top of the frame, don't chop of heads, how to hold the camera. I would think it'd be less about learning the "skills" and more of a field-trip to take pictures of. Like go to the zoo and everyone take at least 25 pictures, then make a simple photo book (as easy as iPhoto).

Older kids (with a handle on math is a good guide): Finer composition (thirds, golden mean), and the triangle of exposure (shutter speed vs. aperture vs. ISO speed). In the public school, we spend the first semester nailing down the points of how to "make" an image on the technical side. They understand the math of "stops" and what numbers mean what. Then in the second semester we begin to study bodies of work like camera obscura, early portable film, Warhol (a week of his own), War and conflict photography (from Brady to Nachtwey is a good summary), portrait study.

Heh, so have mine.. but teaching photography to them? Nope.

Not to say there is not an exception or two to the rule, but in general a 6-8 year old is not going to be interested in instruction of finer poiints beyond what button to press and which way to point it.

Breezy:

Checkout the extension university non-credit evening courses.

You'll get an idea of books to use, time spent in classrooms, time spent in the field and how much is charged.

ASU and Howard College, both online catalogs, give the type of info you'd need. Best to look at what your local colleges and community colleges offer. It will at least give you ballpark figures.

As another option, you are talking about teaching kids as young as 8. You might look at the local VA Beach or Norfolk Schools and see if any offer a photo class and see what they are teaching. It might be more aimed at the age group than college courses. Also see if you DH can get ahold of the Navy Photography training manuals through training. This is very dry material but it is VERY comprehensive. Good Luck!!
