Not a legend. I read an interview with Waylon Jennings about the incident. IIRC, The Big Bopper talked Waylon in to giving up his seat. Jennings felt guilt over this for the rest of his life.

My wife and I saw a neat Buddy Holly musical in Galveston Labor Day weekend of 2007. It was a great portrayal of the singers with some good acting, singing and playing.

I remember the day. I was working in Allentown PA.
Chantilly Lace was one of my favorites in those days...

Almost correct Waylon volunteered to give his seat up the actual coin toss was between Tommy Allsup a and Valens thus Allsup opened the Heads Up Saloon in deep ellum in the mid 80s
