I want something to hand out offering free pictures for a persons time modeling. Is this a good idea? I understand this might seem like a stupid question.

Not everyone knows the concept of TF*. If your looking to book first timers I think it's a good idea. You might want something along the line of a postcard that explains what your offering and gives some examples of your work.

While I was portfolio building, I just gave out my regular card, and explained that I was offering sessions, etc to build my portfolio and thought they'd be a good addition.
I think the personal aspect of talking/connecting is the important part - the business card is just the info to get them to you after you've done your job of selling yourself.

This way I can build a portfolio and they get a nice set of pictures.

My first suggestion would be to get somebody to proof read whatever card you decide to do.

Clifton...
I don't think anyone wants to advertise that they are 'amateur'...that's like saying you are 'unprofessional'. What's wrong with simply having some cards made up to advertise your photographic interest (perhaps including your areas of specialty) and as you hand them out just tell them you think they would make an interesting subject that you would like to shoot 'free gratis' in exchange for their time and cooperation. Or, make up a nice looking card that includes a statement at the bottom that says, "Ask about free photo sessions." Regardless, just because you (and I) are amateurs doesn't mean we need to advertise it. Just my humble opinion...

After all I'm still learning what I'm doing. And the end result might not be what they were expecting.

The easiest way to get models to photograph TF* is to set up an account on ModelMayhem, ModelLaunch, or OneTalentSource.
OTS is a "G-Rated" site, and has a lot of kids, albeit kids with a lot of experience in modeling and acting. If you're looking to do kid & family photography, OTS would be my choice. If you're wanting more mature models, one of the other two would be your better choice. However, on any site, you will probably get several wannabee models who aren't really serious about it, and you'll probably have some no-shows. Just don't take it personally.
My 2 cents. | | | |

Clifton...
If I were going to purchase business cards to hand out, I would have confidence that I could do a reasonably acceptable job for my customer. If you wanted to downplay your potential capabilities, you could do that verbally. Why pay good money to buy perhaps 500-1000 cards that all say "I'm an amateur"? Let the cards advertise your capabilities, and as you enter into negotiations and measure what each job requires, you can make individual judgements at that time whether you want to advise your customer that you are just an amateur. Amateurs don't need cards - they're all over the place. That said, if you still feel the need to advertise your amateur status, by all means buy your cards and put "amateur" on them. Good luck either way. :-)
