fort worth zoo: am or pm? - 02-07-2009, 06:36 PM

going to the zoo on Monday (if the rain will stay away) to break in my new lens. Anyone know if the animals are more active early in the day or later near closing? I've been there a million times but never really paid much attention to the times and what all the animals were up to. We've seen the lions roar a few times and are hoping to catch that again.

Any tips would be great!

Brad

I think it depends on the animal, but the tiger shoots are held in the morning because that is when the cats are most active. As the day heats, many of the animals take a siesta.

Just got back home. I love the Ft. Worth zoo. my wife and i used to go like once a month, but we havent been in a little while before today.

The lens was my new 70-200 f/2.8L IS. Its a great lens, and i actually am just getting ready to check out the pics. The reach isnt all that great for most of the enclosures, but would do better with a 1.4x attached im guessing. I can imagine that a 100-400 would be perfect! I'll post a few pics later once i get them sorted.

My 400 was almost too close for the tigers and lions. In fact, my most successful shots came from using my 70-200. (The body is the 50D.)

Last time I went it was along with the entire kindergarten class from my son's school. My duty was to make sure my son and two of his classmates didn't get eaten by something large or run off and disappear.

Fort Worth Zoo photography policy forbids the posting of pictures from the zoo on the internet.

For the animals that you are most interested in, I would try to call beforehand and find out what their feeding time is. Most zoo animals become the most active just before their feeding times. Otherwise, early morning or late afternoon when it starts to cool off are probably best.

Which is why I do not go to the Fort Worth Zoo any more to shoot. Too bad really because it's a nice zoo and they want you to take photos just don't do anything with them. I mean that policy clearly states to not post on the internet so you could not even share with family and friends if you wanted to.. silly. No really you can not post them on the internet if you intend to use them for commercial profit. Not clear on the publicly exploits bit maybe a lawyer type person can shed some light on that.

"By entering the Fort Worth Zoo, all guests, patrons, employees and volunteers agree that
photographs and videos of animals and other property at the Fort Worth Zoo may not be used for commercial profit (i.e., financial gain), for publicity, or for any other purpose that commercially or publicly exploits the photos and videos, including posting the
images on the Internet."

I didn't know that, but here's from the policy:

"By entering the Fort Worth Zoo, all guests, patrons, employees and volunteers agree that
photographs and videos of animals and other property at the Fort Worth Zoo may not be
used for commercial profit (i.e., financial gain), for publicity, or for any other purpose
that commercially or publicly exploits the photos and videos, including posting the
images on the Internet."

Now we need a legal expert to chime in, because in the confines of the forum we are focused on the photographic aspects of the images and not seeking commercial or public gain. There are many, many photos in many, many threads from the FW Zoo here. Are we legal?

My thoughts exactly. I posted them just to share with friends on here, not to say, look at my photos and hire me! I think as long as you are just showing pics from your day you should be okay, but then again, im no legal expert.

I'm not a lawyer, but I would interpret that to mean no posting on the web in a commercial context.
