Wood ID Help - 02-08-2009, 12:23 AM

I found some nice planks of wood that supposedly belonged to my Grandfather. They are at least 40 years old and no one knows what they are. Any experts here?

I think Teak, but have no reason why.

My screen is showing it to be a little orange - if not for that, I would say walnut.

Do you know what your grandfather intended it for?

I inherited a bunch of mahogany from my grandfather in the shape of a 1937 wooden speedboat. :-)

I lean toward Walnut also. Is it all uniform in color like that?

Walnut seems to fit. They are all fairly uniform in color. On my monitor the color seems to match the actual sample.

No one knows what he was going to use it for but he had several 3/4 in boards of various lengths.

Walnut for me too although the slightly yellowed areas might also indicate poplar. The overall color of the wood though brings me back to American walnut again (as opposed to black walnut). Beautiful grain in the wood you have there and not something you see much of anymore in planks.

I have a secret identity as a production manager in a wood moulding business when I am not taking photos as SUPER PHOTOGRAPHER:)
Definitely walnut. The yellowing in the lower photo is heartwood versus sapwood.
No way it is poplar or birch. I thought ash also when the images first loaded before the color cleared up, but ash has a different more random grain.
Nice find. Walnut is very expensive.

I agree with Randy. If you were to sand the age or patina off the surface, I think the pieces would tend to be more brown in color, more what you would expect to see in Walnut. I'm NOT suggesting that you sand these.

I too think it's walnut. Color and grain looks right. Quartersawn, it makes an excellent wood for guitar backs and sides.

Thanks guys. These pictures came from freshly cut pieces - I guess I should have mentioned that when I asked for help. I decided to use them to make a box for a nixie clock. I'll post pics when it is fully assembled.
