iPhone Users - What is the perfect camera app? - 02-09-2009, 03:03 PM

Hey All,

Been working on a project and thought I'd just throw it out there as I really don't care who makes it as long as it gets done.

I'm looking to build The Great Camera App for the iPhone. This application would be targeted at experienced photographers as opposed to newbies (ie, you have to be familiar with photography terms and methods). It would be an AIO application that has no specific target (ie Studio photography vs Landscape photography)

So what would you have it include? What would assist you in the field? It can be from existing apps or from something you want to see developed.

Here are some ideas...
- Star positions including polaris ID
- Sunrise/Sunset times (via Location Finder)
- DOF calculator
- Studio setup with realtime example (move lights and see result on iModel)
- "Photographers Rights" document
- Camera/flash control manuals (iPhone-sensitive manuals)
- Basic tutorials (remotes, star trails, sensor cleaning, macro)
- Model release

What wouldn't it do: Image editing, portfolio or image display, anything to do with iPhone camera.

So what are your thoughts?

Joe

Ability to save your iModel setups as a screen shot to build your own lighting library.

Might as well add in a level for landscape shooting folks. There's already a few out there but if it is within the app that save some hopping around.

What about Geo-Tagging? One less dongle...

Lighting ratio calculator might be nice.

There's a few off the top of my melon.....

Grayscale might be tough as screen angle and all that might really make it tough to get a reliable reading.

I don't think using it as a gray card would work, it needs to reflect 18% of the light hitting it.

The ability to add your own notes or tips. For example, I might be planning to shoot in a new situation of some kind, and I'd like to do research in advance. Being able to take notes that I could view on the iPhone later, while at the shoot, would be great.

Also, a color wheel. For those dummies like me who just can't remember the complimentary colors.

And how about a WB chart with examples? Could maybe incorperate the camera for live examples...

What about an equipment inventory list?

What about a bag packing list?

For me neither of these would be very important. If I had them they would be where I could print them out (laptop or desktop) and annotate or checkoff with a pen as I load, etc. I guess if you had a check box list it may work but I don't see that as a big deal with the exception that if you had a sync-able list on your phone if stuff got stolen you would have your serial numbers with you, but for day to day I would never use it.

I have an encrypted folder that has a strong password to protect my personal info, and my camera equipment serial numbers in the event it got lost somewhere. I use Firebox for that.

I also like PhotoCalc. It has some of your listed wants:

- Sunrise/Sunset times (via Location Finder)
- DOF calculator

And in a commercial environment, you could put a model release (or whatever) on your web site and have it E-Signed from the iPhone browser.

Buy the white one and you can use it instead of gray for White Balance.

Variable brightness settings on the IPhone would skew any WB/Gray card use. I know I change my brightness several times a day, and the iPhone also automatically adjusts it.

Idea: Posing guides for shots (i.e. "typical" wedding, engagement, couples, poses, etc)

I think something were you can add the serial numbers of your equipment....if you do have an inventory list....It might help to have a bag setup chart....to show where each of your lenses are in a particular bag...(I'm anal..I alway tag the bag with p-touch printer)

Thanks for mentioning PhotoCalc. Looks very useful so I just bought it. :-)
