DFW to Nacogdoches? - 02-10-2009, 06:27 PM

Ok, I know there are several ways to get there, but since I've only been there 1 time I'm soliciting advice on the best way to get there. I have to drive there on Monday for a week of training.

I-20 to US-259 worked well for me several years ago.

Having grown up in Nac and driven to Dallas/Ft Worth a few times, there are plenty of alternatives that are faster, but require traveling the "back roads". That being said, the easiest way is the one mentioned above - I20 East to 259 South and you'll be happy.

Are you going for training at http://www.combatshootingandtactics.com/ ? The guy opened the place just before I moved in 2006. As a matter of fact, just two months after I moved they held The Texas Tactical Police Officers Association SWAT competition at that site. It would have made a great photo op if I had still been there.

That's exactly where I'm headed. 6 days of training with Paul Howe. (If you don't know who he is check this wikipedia link.) Tactical rifle instructor school. I'll be getting certified as an instructor for 4 days and then putting on a class for 2 days. I hope to get a chance to take a few shots (photo type).

I like "back roads", so if you didn't go I20 which way would you go?

Take the scenic (and more direct) route:

Hwy 175 out of Dallas to Jacksonville
In Jacksonville, head east on 79 a couple of miles until it hits 204
Take 204 all the way until it turns into 259
Take 259 south into Nacogdoches

see if this works: really long map url

Went to college at SFA and made this drive every weekend. Hwy 204 is a 2-lane road, but traffic is usually minimal, and I always loved the scenery, especially spring/fall. Even doing it every weekend, I never got tired of that drive. You may even see something to photograph too...lots of small and old towns on that route. It tends to be a little quicker than the I-20/259 route too, since it's almost a direct line.

edit: Took awhile, but finally got the map url right. As an aside, there will be no shortage of Dairy Queens. Also, before you get into Nac, shortly after you pass the 59/259 intersection, there's an old tin building surrounded by weeds next to a body shop on the right. Right outside that old tin building is my old delapidated blue 65 Mustang. It used to be a Mustang grave yard, but all of the other cars are gone now...not sure why mine isn't too. Say hi to her for me.

Let the Truckers and the Tourists have that route.

2 lane roads are the best! Everybody avoids them. No traffic. Lots of scenery.

Torrey got you there. Come back a different way. I would suggest going north of I-20 and then west back into Richardson-Plano. Or, US-80 from MArshall to Terrell is nice. There are some good old towns along the way. However, even Hwy 80 has been rerouted away frm the old Main Streets in many towns. You have to slow down and look for the good stuff.

Great route or if you are coming north dallas take 380 out od mkinney to 69 in greenville, turn right on hwy 19 in emory take though canton to athens, pick up 79 and follow to 204 then 259 as stated above.

This is by no means the fastest way but very nice drive. or there are plenty of other ways if you care to know PM me

Grand Saline is worth a stop. The old main part of town is south of US-80.

The best way to get there on Tuesday, is to leave on Sunday! Maybe even Saturday!!
