Brushes with fame - 02-12-2009, 02:21 AM

Got the idea for this from a Longboarding forum, but thought id start a thread here after bumping into Wayne Gretzky today at work. I ended up talking to him for a few minutes. Really cool guy actually. I was carrying a few hats and he stopped me to check them out. He even asked if i had one big enough to fit Brett Hull's head. Funny guy.

Just wondering who you guys may have run across, whether it be photography related or even if you just happen to sit next to someone at a diner. Anything at all. I always like hearing how stars act to us normal people.

Anyway, post your brushes with fame!

I've got a bud who owns a pretty cool bar here in town that I frequent and it seems that Nick Stahl has grown to like the place as well. He's from Terminator 3, Carnivale, Sin City and a bunch of others. I snapped a quick one of him and my star-struck friend. He was cool, not bothered and just normal.

Hung out with the Gin Blossoms in their trailer after a concert for about an hour a few months back.. That was pretty cool. KJ shot the guitarist's sisters wedding in Hawaii so we got the hook up. Super nice guys.

My cousin is (was...who knows) married to Don Henley...Never met him though. Does that count? LOL

Working where I do, over the years I've met a great varity. From Cher to Jim Nabors. And about every actor, rock star you can think of. After seeing a group of "little people" dressed like KISS parade through the lobby at 0300. The novelty wears off fast.

My dad and I used to have lunch with AJ Foyt when I was a kid and we were still farming. AJ lives down the road from us. I'll keep my opinion of his people skills to myself.

In college one year, I went to the national Society of Professional Journalists convention and had a few close brushes. It was in Nashville, so sort of within driving distance from Denton (long drive).

Anyhow, rode the elevator with documentarian Ken Burns, who was staying in the penthouse at the hotel. Then, passed Jane Pauley on the stairs. Saw lots of other famous journalists, but not as up-close and personal as those two.

I have met over 70 actors from the Star Wars movies and other Sci-Fi movies. From Tom Jane to Kevin Sorbo to Alan Tudyk. Lots more!

I used to run into lots of famous people and stopped a few on traffic as a police officer (Vanilla Ice at the height of his fame and lots of locals such as Dallas Cowboys). Some of the people I've met: Former President Jimmy Carter, Astronaut (second man on the moon) Buzz Aldrin, Ron Wood of the Rolling Stones, Steven Tyler, John Mellencamp, Jimmy Stewart (actor, not the motocross guy), KISS and many others.

At a S.H.O.T. Show in Dallas in the early nineties I was walking the floor looking for deals when I passed the Talon Mfg. booth and saw a familiar figure...I asked one of the salesmen if that was Carlos Hathcock...He said, "It sure is, do you want to meet him?"...I knew that Multiple Sclerosis was eating the Gunny alive and he was slumped in his wheelchair so I didn't want to bother him...I told the sales rep the Gunny looked like he was asleep and I'd come by later...

But he told me the Gunny was awake and wanted to do his job and meet everybody...He took me to the rear of their booth and introduced me...The man had the firmest handshake I've ever held and for a half-hour we talked liked we were old friends...I could see he was getting tired though so we shook hands again and I left...

The next year the show was in Las Vegas and I attended again...Walking around I heard an unmistakable deep voice say, "Mr. Young!"...He was with Talon again and not only recognized me from our brief meeting a year before but he even remembered my name!...We talked again for about a half-hour about hunting and walking the woods in Arkansas and then I made my goodbyes again...I never saw him again as MS weakened him too much to leave home...

He's gone now but I'll remember his voice and his handshake to my dying day...Anybody that wants to read about a life of courage, dedication and humility should look up the history of Gunnery Sergeant Carlos Hathcock...Ben

Sometimes you don't remember that they are famous.

I used to be good friends with Joe Thiesman ( Redskins Quarterback ).
We'd play raquetball every week unless it was football season.
He'd bring a lot of 'skins players to the club.

It's a real rush when you are in a large crowd of people, mostly whom are excited that Joe Theisman is there, and he yells out "Hey Tom, you still owe me a beer !!".
