Good luck, Most venues state "No Professional photo equipment in the stands" That catch is most of the people at the gates don't know what pro gear is.
I had no trouble getting my D300 and 55-200mm into Texas Stadium on Thanksgiving to see the Cowboys.
I will also be shooting at several Texas Rangers games this year, But I will be on the field for warm-ups with a Rangers Photo pass!

Good Luck
Jim

I shot at the HCC about three years ago. It's a pretty laid back atmosphere. The only thing you're not supposed to bring is a mono/tripod.

As for me, I brought 2 bodies, 70-200, and 28-135.

I've taken my 1Ds Mark III with 70-200 f/2.8 IS and 1.4X Teleconverter to both Minute Maid Park and Reliant Stadium with no resistance from the people at the door. According to the minute maid park web site... "Cameras/Video Equipment: Visitors are welcome to bring video and still cameras into the ballpark; however, tripods and monopods are not allowed in the seating areas. "

Good luck with sports shooting. It's a rewarding profession, for sure.

It's also extremely expensive. The back surgery alone from carrying all those humongous lenses is a real killer, besides the cost of the lenses themselves. For baseball, a long lens is a must. I didn't have the reach I wanted the few times I got into the third-base well at the Ballpark at Arlington.

Heck yes and yes!

To shoot from the 1st and 3rd base pits you need a 300mm f/2.8 or 400mm f/2.8. During day games you can get away with lower fstop lenses.

Just a suggestion, but a better way to learn (and get into) sports photography is to go to high school games. You won't have to worry about whether "they" will let you in, you can get right down on the gym floor or field, and its cheaper to get in than in a pro or Div I arena.

I agree with David. Jason runs LSCSN.com and is a great guy and I cover sports for him when I can.
