GIVING BACK- Pro Bono Work - 02-19-2009, 08:12 PM

Do you all do charirty work? I am looking for this company that takes photos of children who are ill, it is a national company that will contact you and assign a family, etc for you to photograph. I really would like to work with children who are recovering, or ill, etc because of my work at Disney, I felt a strong connection and a great feeling for doing that kind of volunteer work.

Do you all have any recommendations or information on any charities I can get involved with?

I do a lot of pro bono work... the most prominent one is the work I do for a charity haunted house. I do a lot of promotional photography for them as well as applying myself to non-photography related jobs there.

I also am on the list of photographers at Operation: Love ReUnited - http://oplove.org .. an organization dedicated to raising the morale of our deployed soldiers

There are people on TPF that shoot with Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep (NILMDTS) - which does free photoshoots with terminal newborns.

There are lots of ways to give to the community around you.. your idea sounds great, too. I'm sure there's an organization out there that does it. If you find one, please post back to this thread.. maybe we can even get it "stickified" as people find other charity organizations to add.

I do NILMDTS...I personally wouldn't mind doing some for older kids...maybe some that have been sick and in the hospital for a long time..I'm sure they don't get to do "normal" things and taking photos would be fun for them...I am very familiar with a pediatric cardioligist ...I should contact her.

Alyssa:
You going to do it on your own, or have anything to do that relates to Disney, you might want to contact someone in their media relations office in your area to see if they are interested in adding a little fuel to the fire too...

If you are doing it on your own, I would recommend contacting the Children's Hospital over there in Dallas or Shriners. You might also contact Make A Wish to shoot one of their wish granting sessions...

Texas Special Olypmics or the local Spina Bifida group (their summer camps are coming up)

Good luck.

I'm the area coordinator for NILMDTS - it is a wonderful organization to be part of - however it is NOT for everyone. The standards to be part of NILMDTS have increased signifigantly from when they first started. One of the cool things, however, is that we have a 'call calendar' for the Texas Medical Center. You sign up for a couple of days a month to be 'on call' - if any calls come in on those days - you handle them. If not, you did your 'time' and we thank you. It works wonderfully for those of us who volunteer.

If you have any questions - please feel free to ask. I love discussing NILMDTS on forums because it answers questions OTHERS may have about it. Exposure is key... for so many reasons. ;-)

Here's one a girl started for ill children. I've done a few for them. . . they can be heartwrenching. As I'm sure NILMDTS is.

Jen, I think that is the one I was looking into. I am really looking for anything right now, just want to give and volunteer. I really appreciate everyone's overwhelming responses so far. Keep them coming, we really do need to start a sticky for this. I am also intersted in NILMDTS.

A couple of weeks ago, I got an email from a group starting up in the McKinney, Plano, Frisco area similar to NILMDTS asking for volunteers. I would have sworn it was called Angela's Angels, but I just googled it and came up empty, so I may have the name wrong. Maybe someone else got the email & can remember the right name.
