After attending a few workshops over the last two years I've been thinking about what I have and haven't liked about them. I was wondering what other people look for in a workshop. So I made this little survey to see what you would like if you could tailor make a workshop for you.
Note: This is geared towards photographers working with models.
Just six questions: click here to take survey"

I started to take the survey, but didn't like it.
Some workshops should be a day while others should be a week. Some should be about studio lighting, while others location lighting. | | | |

That's why some of the questions are rankings and multiple choice. If you budgeted money to spend next six months what would you spend it on? Assuming you even wanted to spend it on a workshop like this. Coelus added 3 Minutes and 8 Seconds later...Double Post Merged Below

John, I'm not into workshops involving model shoots, so I didn't take your survey. But one thing that specifically bothers me about workshops in general is when they become a sales pitch for a specific brand of insert item here: (camera, reflector, flash, ring flash, hot lights, umbrella, soft box, studio backdrop, matte cutter, framing tool, white balance card, exposure disc, printer, ink, paper, etc. etc. etc.).
I'm sure you know what I mean, but unless the workshop is billed as a specific brand tryout, or software instruction, it should be generic to any type of camera, lighting, printing setup. I hate it when I'm pitched as in "buy this light and you will obtain this look" type seminars. I just came back from a day long workshop this weekend where just at lunch time, a number of the participants were already bitching about how much time was spent pushing products, versus the actual instruction techniques. The day could have been compressed into a half day without the pitches. Needless to say, this workshop won't get good word of mouth from those folks.

I don't mind a little sweat equity and time to learn something. I'm curious how many other people are the same way and what others are looking for.

Count me in on the:
If you are going to teach me about photography, then don't let it be about the brand of what I own, or what I shoot with, let it be about photography.
If you are going to try to sell me something - then let me know in advance so that I can avoid your workshop.

Ha ha, it looks like it would have been funny to ask; "Do you want to hear a sales pitch for the instructors sponsors?"

John. I started the survey. It was too general. When I go to a lighting workshop I expect to learn about light. Glamour Workshop Maybe some lighting and posting. Then there are the shootouts where all it is, is a model and lots of photog and you just go for it. I try to look for workshops that will fill a void or show me how to do something that I want to learn how to do. Then there are the workshops that are all about networking. It doesn't matter if I learn anything or get any good shots!
I like hands on workshops. I want to try to reproduce what I am being taught. I want to make sure that I fully understand what I am being taught. That is why I LOVE Tri-Coast. They teach, make sure that you understand, and let you test it. Cody is a real sport, he will model for me until I "get it"! And Jordan won't stop teaching until my thick head understands and Mike covers it all. Best of all I like their "Bring a positive attitude". I wish that others had this same attitude. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
