So I am going to Salt Lake City at the end of the week for a couple of days and I will have about a day and a half to kill around. What is there to do and what should I definitely go see and take pictures of?

I was there on a gun-buying trip January of last year...See whatever is scheduled at the Salt Palace...I can't remember the name of the hotel I stayed at but it was across the street from the Salt Palace and very, very nice...
The city is situated in a valley and you will be surrounded by gorgeous mountain scenery...If you're not driving out there, rent a car and get out of the city...You can see the mountains from anywhere in the city...
i didn't realize beforehand how much slack time I would have there so I didn't even take a camera...Also if you have a Texas CHL, it is valid in Utah so take your gun if you like...I wouldn't worry too much about crime as the Mormons don't tolerate it very well...It's also one of the cleanest cities I've visited...
Speaking of the Mormons, the Mormon Temple is very photogenic and also the State capitol is newly renovated and restored...The Governors aide is a long time friend of mine and was good enough to take time out of his busy schedule and give a guided tour of the building (including the normally hidden areas)...It's camera friendly and the legislature is in session so you can take pictures there also...I found out after we got there that there are no restrictions on CHL holders carring their concealed firearms in the building (I didn't have mine with me) and they don't have metal detectors at the entrances...Yet it's extremely secure even though most areas, including the Governor's office, are open...
If you like architecture and western history, you'll have a good time...Ben

If you rent a car go to Park City.
The capital is very photogenic.
You might catch the Mavericks playing the Jazz.
There are some areas of the Great Salt Lake that are very photogenic.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm...researching the memory banks.
If you like Urban, Ben covered the highlights.
If you like un-Urban and you have a car...
Antelope Island State Park is unspoiled. The drive up Logan Canyon is nice. If you have time, go all the way to Bear Lake.
If I had a day and half and a car and I was in Salt Lake city...I would go to Jackson, Wyoming.
Enjoy!

I am getting a rental car so I will try to get out of the city and see what's around. I haven't been out there before so it should be a good experience. I am there for a professional school interview so getting out of town to relax might do me some good.
Thanks for all the suggestions I try and see what I can fit in.

Maob.
Moab.
Moab.
Moab.
It is freaking gorgeous.
Seriously.
My husband took this with an Kodak Easyshare thing, stitched IN camera - no editing what so ever... THAT is how freaking gorgeous this place is. I took 2000+ images that I haven't even started playing with cause it's going to take me DAYS to go through them.

I can't give you suggestions on what to shoot. BUT, Squatters for lunch or dinner would be a good choice.

You have a day & a half: There are some of the best parks in the world about 6-8 hours away.
Being me, I would get up real freaken early and drive out to one of the parks, spend as much time there as possible, then drive back after dark.
Long exhausting day, but well worth it.
Parks to see (get a Utah book for routes):
Zion (about 8 hours south of SLC)
Arches (near Moab, about 6 hours West of SLC)
CanyonLands
Bryce
Cedar Breaks
Staircase
I was in Utah last year, but had about 2 weeks. Day one, landed SLC about noon, drove to Zion. Stayed a few days, then drove to Bryce, stayed a few days, then Arches (via short Canyonlands detour), stayed a few days, then Mesa Verde (in Colorado via short monument valley detour), then back to SLC (made drive from Mesa Verde back to SLC in one day including lunch in Moab).
Also just a drive South and East is well worth it.
We went in late May and there was still snow in areas. Steelsun added 0 Minutes and 49 Seconds later...Double Post Merged Below
Oh, and the first chain KFC was built on the south side of SLC. It's still there, but a new building, and visible from the freeway.

I'm partial to north and east this time of year. I don't think Jackson is any farther than Moab. Maybe closer.
I'm afraid if I ever get back to the 4 Corners area I won't leave.

I'm not sure if the Tabernacle choir still rehearses on Thursday nights, but if they do, you should definitely try to see them. You will be glad you did. Take your fast lens and get some pictures of a the beautiful building, too.
The Mormon Tabernacle Choir rehearses every Thursday evening in the Tabernacle. Unless otherwise noted below, the rehearsals are open to the public. Doors are opened at 8:00 pm and the rehearsal concludes at 9:30.
