Good stuff!
I've had my artwork critiqued since i was in middle school.
Now I just roll my eyes and laugh when someone can't take the heat.

I've had stuff (graphic design) ripped apart by professors in college, but when you do get a good critique it actually means something then. As long as it's CONSTRUCTIVE criticism I can take it fine. If someone just says "it sucks" and can't explain why they think it sucks, that's when I'm annoyed.

You learn more from mistakes than from successes.

I always appreciate a honest, well thought out critique because I'm not too good at critiquing my own work. However, when someone just says it's crap without being able to articulate why they feel that way, well I just don't listen to them. A nature photographer I worked with once, said you have to be ready to be rejected 95% of the time.

It is as hard for me to take critique, as anyone and more so, but if I keep my mouth shut and mind open it helps. Also helps to just forget sometimes :)

the SS folks experiences are certainly eye opening. Most of my class professors have not been as tough, but this semester, I have a new one who is.

giving critiques is a talent that most who critique don't have.

As an engineer I have to critique designs daily. it's not so much what you say as how you say it. Not sugar coating or sidestepping issues, just saying it in ways that will communicate your point and get the job done.

Belittling or being a pompous ass rarely accomplishes anything positive. If I want people to ask my opinion and if in doing so I set myself up as some self-annointed arrogant bozo, they'll avoid me, not take me seriously and the project won't get done right.

Artists and engineers aren't that different. It's still their baby. Calling a baby ugly gets no one anywhere.

While in journalism school, all of us on the university paper were ripped up pretty well for everything (writing, news coverage, news judgment, photos, page layout) during formal, weekly group critiques by our professors . It made me a better journalist. And like a few photogs lamented about the passing of some of the grouchy curmudgeons, I see the same thing happening at my alma mater ... writers who weren't put through the wringer by profs who'd lived the job years ago and end up being sloppy and unprofessional post-graduation.

We should embrace the chance to receive critiques!

I prefer blunt honest critiques over sugar coated comments. That's why I seldom post photos here anymore.

I'll agree people get butthurt when they get an honest crit here. Abel, maybe a serious photo crit subforum for each of the showcase sections. I really would like to have some honest crit to my work, but it's hard to get here (and other places as well).
