I have a friend who took early retirement from the Ft. Worth Star Telegram because he was afraid that he may be laid-off due to business slowdowns. Lots of people I know have dropped the paper, so this type of news comes as no surprise.

they still print papers? ;)

We dropped the Houston Chronicle over 5 years ago but I still read it daily online.

Your friend was smart. The Star-Telegram had two major layoffs last year, many from the newsroom. The content has really suffered. Not much to read even in the Sunday edition anymore. People are increasingly turning to the Web for their information, and they want it for free.

It's an industry-wide thing, and I'm not surprised the S-F Chronicle is on the ropes, too. My newspaper days are over.

I had several friends take a buyout at the S-T.
I took the buyout and retired..

News is not good in the News business.. San Antonio paper lost 6 from photography this week.. Huston Chronical is next... Star-Telegram is facing more layoffs in the next week or so.. Dallas Morning News facing layoffs.. Rocky Mountain News published last edition today..

Sad if you are in tht business..

I only recognize a couple of photographers credits in the S-T.
Where did the new people come from ? Are they all stringers ?

Sad even if you are NOT in the business. It's hard enough to remember when Dallas had two local daily papers. At the rate things are going, I worry about having none sooner rather than later.

Hate to High jack the thread but .............. - 02-27-2009, 04:30 PM

These papers like everyone else have to change with the times. I found this story to be a very cool read for people that like gadgets .I know if the Dallas Morning news did it this way I would buy a subscription back.

I still shoot for the local papers, but have friends who WERE on staff, but no longer are. Some took a buy-out and some got laid off. Things are grim for the world of newspapers...
