Dark Skies Near Richardson/Garland? - 02-25-2009, 01:57 AM

I would like to see Comet Lulin, but I probably need dark skies to do that. The closest dark skies to the Dallas area is in Oklahoma, but that's farther than I want to drive right now. Does anyone know if the skies are dark enough around Rowlett?

I don't know for sure, not living around there anymore, but Rowlett is kind of a hopping little town, too. Might not be dark enough.

How far are you willing to go? There might be some areas just outside Denton, Sherman or Gainesville, as all three have some undeveloped land (but that's almost to Oklahoma). Also, maybe one of the lakes that doesn't have private land around it? Although not sure if you'd be allowed at one of the parks at night.

Probably too much light around Rowlett. OK or East TX is your best choice. There was a thread last year on a comet viewing and someone was headed for a state park about 1-2 hours east - Out I 30 or between I 30 and I 20 I think. Try searching the threads for "comet" or "star trails".
