Question How Many Shots? - 03-02-2009, 10:42 AM

Just curious about how many shots you take in a standard session? 1 subject.
Lets say you have 3 hours scheduled with someone and 30 minutes is going to be spent in MU, and there are to be 3 clothing changes along with set changes. Lets allow 30 minutes for the set and clothing changes. Purpose is for display as an example of your work, and will be printed 16X20
So, how many shots do you think you would take?

My goal is about 3-5 images per pose and 4-5 poses per wardrobe/makeup look. Sometimes it takes a bit more, sometimes less. In general I'll average 24-36 images per look. I will not normally process more than two images per look unless paid extra to do so.

Not to hijack, but do you studio shooters tether your cameras to computers to ensure you've got the looks you want? If so, I imagine that would definitely cut down the "just in case" shots.

Not me... The D3 has a nice 3" LCD and after shooting it for over a year, it's WISIWIG

I have only shot tethered a few times for a test. I didn't like it one bit....(cables and such)

As Scott mentions, the 3" LCD on the newer bodies are pretty darn good. I use those.

However, I am considering trying out my Eye-fi card with my Macbook Pro and Lightroom on my next session. I shoot RAW + small JPG and the Eye-fi card will wirelessly send the JGP to my laptop and import into LR. It'll show up in the import window within a few seconds.

Played around with it at home and it worked fairly well. Probably won't be a solution I use all the time, but I can think of a few situations where I have a client (not the models) on-site at the shoot that would like to see the images as I shoot. This should work well.

Once I have the lighting the way I want, I'll only shoot ten frames or so.
Sometimes only a couple. I know when I get what I want.

If I am shooting for a client and not myself, I'll tether to the computer so they can choose an expression or specific pose that they like.

If I want the model to see what I have shot, I'll let her/him look at the LCD.
I think it's a good learning experience for new models.

Then I jump in and make them sit on my lap for a nice picture... anybody else do this ??

I would just like to say that I felt VERY uncomfortable when you asked me to.
