iPhone International Tips - 03-09-2009, 10:04 AM

For those who might travel internationally with their iPhone, I thought I'd share this info just in case you didn't get the email from AT&T. I've heard of some people racking up huge bills due to "roaming" being turned on and not realizing that the standard data plan doesn't include international use.

For my last trip I had to call and have them start the international plan since I had just signed the contract and it takes a few months for it to happen automatically. ATT is apparently VERY aware of how this can catch people off guard because the CS rep I spoke with over the phone kept mentioning to me turn data roaming off. Her follow up email mentioned it again, several times, with instructions. I think it is on their website too.

By the way, if you are up to date on your iPhone software, it is turned off by default.

Yeah - I just got back from a weeklong cruise to Mexico. I went in before the cruise to talk about getting the international package added. It's only like $5 a month plus fees (which will be about 60 cents a minute), but that is voice only. You can add Data for another $30 but it's limited to 50 MBs or so, and that gets used quick with normal pings.

Someone else I talked to advised to make sure international data roaming is off, and to keep your phone in Airplane mode if you don't want any fees (like to use it as an ipod, play games, etc). Also do not use it on a cruise ship or you will pay out a heck of alot more.
