Condo Associations...ugh... - 03-11-2009, 06:33 PM

I've been trotting back and forth to Board Meetings for the last six months since Hurricane Ike reminding my lovely Condo Association about my Hurricane Ike related damage. They have put me off numerous times promising that they will make the repairs and get the foundation company to remeasure the condo to assess whether the foundation might need attention.
Anyway I finally played Lawyer and researched some interesting laws (Uniform Condominium Act and Texas Residential Property Owners laws). I sent a not so nice Certified Letter last week riddled with quoted Texas Law, and lo and behold they (SORT OF) fixed my roof. They didn't quite fix my damaged ventilation systems on the roof or other damage.
I'm a very persistent person when I must be, so they will be hearing from me until everything is resolved. I guess the point of all this is that I'm wondering if anyone else out there has had these same type of problems with condo or townhome associations??

Yeah, this sounds similar to my sister's problem. They will just keep doing inexpensive cosmetic fixes until you force them into a real structural repair. Because the other owners aren't necessarily affected, they won't want to spend the money it takes to really do the repair right, so they will hope you go away with the cosmetic fix.

Problem with Associations whether they are for condo's and homes: you pay either way. Sounds like you will probably have to sue them, then your dues along with others will be used to answer your suite. Then your dues go up!

I hate homowners associations because they never do what is right and they always worry about the wrong things!

Good luck!

If you are in the City of Houston and push comes to shove, I guess you could call building inspectors and maybe get them to red tag it if it qualified. Be careful what you wish for though!
