Just be patient. It's only a matter of time before it happens here in the U.S. And of course, the law makers who try to instigate this type of thing will spew some crap about how "If you aren't doing anything wrong, then you don't have anything to worry about." Yeah, right.
We're slowly turning into a police state, and it's a damn shame. Next thing you know, the "authorities" will want to put cameras in everyone's home. That's so they can deter criminal and terrorist activity, of course. It's to make our society safer. And who could possibly complain about that? After all, if you aren't doing anything wrong......

Maybe I'm the forever optimist, but with the first ammendment in place, I don't think it will happen here. I can see if you're on a website looking for ways to build a bomb or ordering large quanities of stuff you're not supposed to be ordering, but no, I don't think so. I guess time will tell.

I guess time will tell. | this is not an attack on you, but a furtherance of this discussion, but why should I not be able to look up how to make a bomb, or find information on any number of topics on the web? Ordering illegal or controlled materials is another thing entirely, but just the information should not be censored. It should only ever be actions that are illegal, not words and ideas.

I guess the only thing that would have made it more ominous if someone had earlier mentioned airplanes and possibly border security in a thread. That would have surely gotten their attention.

What bothers me is that because of the "sniffer" programs currently being used by the FBI and other law enforcement (successors to Carnivore), if you do, you can get on some FBI watch list by doing something that is perfectly legal.
Heaven help you if they think you are building something based on that info. They will probably storm your house, kill your dogs and who knows what else. (Recent Berwyn Heights Mayor incident - not exactly pertinent, but you get the idea.)
I don't know what the right thing is. I go back and forth between giving up some freedoms and letting Law Enforcement have the extra tools to make me safe, but then when I see the tools being misused, I want freedom back.

Patti

Darn...that's a scary-enough thought that I think I'm going to spend less time on the net and start interfacing with real people again! <joke!> Quote:

It's already been happening here for a long time, Carnivore, and other programs.

Dobick...I don't think there are any laws preventing one from looking up that information - assuming it is information that is indeed available on the net. However, doing so will quite possibly make that individual an unwilling and (perhaps) unknowing target for investigations. I doubt that we would prefer that such investigations not be conducted (?) because it is reasonable to assume that unlawful mischief is at hand...just imho... Quote:
