Actual occurence... old folks & computers - 03-14-2009, 10:03 PM

We were helping a friends mom move back to Texas. Her husband passed away, and she moved back to Texas.

She is going through and cleaning out things - old paperwork, etc - and came across the Turbo Tax 2006 program CD.

She picked up a pair of those utility scissors and started to cut it up. I asked her why she was doing that...

Her response: I don't want anyone to get my social security and tax information off of it.

I tried not to start laughing - I promise - but I couldn't stop laughing. It was hilarious.

She might be remembering the old days when the tax programs came on floppy disks. Back then, (at least 15 years ago) my boss was telling me about how easy it was to figure out your tax and how she did hers in just a few minutes with I think an early version of TurboTax.

She gave me the floppy disk with the program so I could calculate my taxes and I discovered that she had saved her completed tax form on the disk. I pointed it out to her and suggested she might want to copy it to her hard drive and delete from the floppy. She was pretty upset when she realized that, but even more so because she had loaned the disk to two other people before me.

I think the program was actually set up to save to the floppy disk as a default if you didn't change it. Sneaky way for them to discourage people from lending their disk to others???
