New Home horror... - 03-17-2009, 01:34 PM

So, as some of you know my fiance and I signed a contract to have a home built for us back in mid January. We went to the design center, picked out tiles, plumbing fixtures, light fixtures, paint, carpet, etc, etc, etc. Then we went to builder meetings to review design center choices and verify blue prints.

Our builder called two weeks ago to tell us that the building permit had been requested, the temporary power pole was placed on the lot and a load of sand had been dumped. Everything was ready to start pouring the foundation and really begin construction...

Then, Friday the 13th rolls around...

Friday evening around 8 PM our builders sales person calls to tell us that they are moving out of our subdivision and they will not be building any more homes here. Houses that are already started will be completed, however, as ours hadn't been started, they aren't going to build it.

What a mix of emotions that caused. Anger, disappointment, amazement, did I mention anger? We had been looking for nearly a year for the perfect home in the Frisco School district, close to my work, and of course in a price range we could afford...

Saturday we spent the day scouring the internet and discussing our options. Then we went for a drive. We spotted a builder that we didn't check out before, only becuase their base price was at the very high end of our budget. We didn't expect to be able to add some upgrades and still fit it in our budget. For whatever reason we stopped. We looked at the model home and were amazed at home decked out it was. I told my girl to not get her hopes up as the models always had lots and lots of upgrades built into them.

I immediately talked to the salesman and told him the home was probably out of our budget with all the extras the model had and wanted to know in detail what all was STANDARD at the base price listed. In short, everything in the home besides the berber carpet and hard wood floor was INCLUDED standard.

This home had the EXACT model and color of faucets, door knobs, lighting fixtures, and ceiling fans, (in oil rubbed bronze) that our previous builder was charging us almost $3000 to upgrade as a standard feature. To keep this from getting even longer, with less than $2500 we've specced out our NEW home and signed a new contract. We'll be in our home about 3 weeks later than our original one we wanted, but this one is truely more elegant and detailed than we ever imagined we could find.

The Lord works in strange ways, and I am sure for some reason he canceleed our initial contract and sent us out to find our new builder. In the end, everything is better than when the process began. It's just been an emotional roller coaster getting here!

Similar situation in the last hurricane caused flood.

The man and wife had sand bagged around their house to keep out the rising flood waters. A neighbor came by with a huge moving van and offered to take them and their possesions to safety. The couple responded that HE WILL PROVIDE, and declined the offer.
A few hours later they had to retreat to the top floor because the sand bags had failed. A rescue boat came to the top floor window and offered to take them to safety. They refused and said that HE WILL PROVIDE.
The next morning they had to climb up on the roof to stay away from the flood waters. A helicopter hovered overhead but they waved it off while yelling HE WILL PROVIDE.
By noon they had been swept away and drowned.

When they reached the pearly gates, they were met by HIM.
They were forlorn and HE asked why. They said they had trusted in HIM to
PROVIDE, but now they were dead.

HE said " Damn, I sent you a truck, a boat and a helicopter, what more did you want ?"

I have heard that before and think it is hilarious!!! We always are waiting for it on the billboard. A friend was feeling like she needed to switch churches...she asked God to give her a very large sign..you know, a billboard, a burning bush, whatever. Within a month the church burned to the ground...OUCH!! She got the message!!

Lesson: God may work in mysterious ways, but most of His work is painfully obvious.

Congrats Matt. That's great! It's a strange world out there for builders these days which makes it strange for home designers too. I'm beginning to see just a glimmer of hope though. What you had happen was a blessing.

We have friends that started their house in may of last year in katy. They were told thanksgiving 2008. But the builder kept delaying and delaying. They already put down 20k on the house. Finally, about 3 weeks ago, the builder told them he was laying off his entire crew. So, these people decided to walk away from the house and try to get some money back later. They have purchased a new one that is newly complete. It is bigger than the house they were going to get, in a better neighborhood and about 40k cheaper. In the long run hopefully they will be better off but it takes a lot to walk away from 20k!

Glad it worked out for you!
