Short Notice: Houston to Palestine, Texas advice needed. - 03-23-2009, 06:01 PM

I find myself having to travel to Palestine, TX tomorrow for an evening meeting. I'll have most of the day to get there, and realize it only takes about 3 to 3 1/2 hours to get there.

Any good photo ops in the area or on the way in (after Huntsville) that I might want to detour and see?

I've already hit the Cado mounds, and am familiar with Crockett (which is probably how I will go - 45 north to 19 at Huntsville, then 19 up through Crockett to Palestine).

Any good small towns that are photog worthy?
Great barns, etc.?

(unfortunately I will have to be in Houston early Wednesday, so will wake up around 6 am from the Palestine motel and rush back in)

Thanks in advance.

I do that every 2 weeks. Been into Crockett? Stopped and looked around?

I go out 290, north on 6, 90 through Anderson, Bedias & Madisonville, 21 to Crockett, 287 to Palestine. Palestine itself has a great, old city center. Lots of old buildings. Find the bakery across from the police station. I would plan a few hours there.

Have fun.

one end of the Texas State Railway is in Palestine, unsure of the operation hours. It is a Texas State park.

Thanks y'all.

Crockett: My dad has a ranch in LaTexo, so I spent a bit of time in Crockett. Nice place. Have not been there in the last 2 years though.

I checked out the state RR. Unfortunately it does not operate during the week right now, but I will drop by to see their static displays.

Also I do have Old Town Palestine on my itinerary.

Will also check out the old cemetery.

I was also informed that the Dogwoods are now in bloom, so the scenic backroads look to be something I can fill up the rest of the schedule with.

Brian
It maybe a little out of your way. But down around Chapelhill there are some good wildflower spots, mostly Bluebonnets.

I used to live in Flint, about 25 miles out of Palestine. if you take 287 n out of Palestine a few miles outside of town is a cemetery, I know that sounds morbid, but there is a rather unique sculpture there made of automobile bumpers. I had to stop turn around and go back and check it out

Rained the whole time (drive up and while there)!

I did get about an hour of no rain after dark before I turned in, so did some long exposures in old town Palestine (at the old gin and an old beat up truck there).

I like the place. I'll be going back there and to Tyler alot in September & October so will try and schedule some more daylight times in. The downtown seems perfect for portraiture - so many great backgrounds.

Saw the bakery. I had the strength to resist going in, don't need to gorge myself that much more.

One pic that came out from the night:
