question to blonde: "Which is farther away, New York City or the moon?"

answer from blonde: " Like that's easy. New York is farther away 'cause you can't see it from here."

I don't understand either.

They are referring to megapixels.
Quote:
the smallest discrete component of an image or picture on a CRT screen (usually a colored dot)
A megabyte is 1,000,000 bytes, a byte is a sequence of 8 bits (enough to represent one character of alphanumeric data) processed as a single unit of information

Yes, 36M is 36 Megabytes. 36K, is 36 Kilobytes. 36G is 36 Gigabytes, and God forbid, 36T is 36 Terabytes.

blonde says...what is so hard!! you choose image size...the little box comes up, shows pixels dimensions (ahhh maybe that's the ticket!!) and says 36.4 M what does the M stand for....

am I speaking english yet?

Ok...see this is why I'm confused!!! Which as you see can be easy!! I'm trying to resize a photo for a yearbook. The original photo (ps'd) is 34.6 M. I resize it to 5M . When I go to send it in outlook, it says it is only 2MB. What's up with that???

It has something to do with the way PS reads the files.

Look at the image size, and let's say it reads 36.4M @ 4368x2912. Now without changing anything, save that file as an uncompressed TIFF. Odds are it will be around 36.4mb's.

Now change that file to 16bits and it will read 72.8M.

That "M" doesn't account for jpg compression.

What thejakestir said. The file size is computed based on the file format that is currently selected. The file size can change if a different format or different compression ratio is used.

So, if you have an image that is one Petabyte in size, does that make it a petafile?

So if I need to make a file as close to 5mb as I can, is there anyway to do that...or is it just a play until you get there system. Because the last one I did, I save it close to 5mb, 300 dpi and saved it as a 12 (when last last little box came up)..but when I went to send the file, it said it was only a 2mb file? Am I missing something? Is it still a 5mb file or is it really a 2mb file?

Why does it have to be 5mb?
Isn't the final resolution the important part?

I mean, a jpg with lots of scenery will be larger then a jpg of all white.
Or a jpg shot at 1600iso will be larger then one shot at 100iso.
That's just the nature of the jpg.

Oh, and no need to save as level 12. You can save some bytes by saving as 10.

All I know is the final size has to be no larger than 5 mb. It is to be submitted for a yearbook. The original size is now 36 M. I am looking for suggestions as to how to get it look the best I can and submit it...

Yea, but when you save it as a level 10 jpg that file will be around 3mb.
Pay no mind to the 36M in PS unless your saving as a TIFF file.

I have 20x30" prints from 3mb jpg's files, so I'm sure that's good enough for the yearbook.

Here is an example:

Here is a web version of the final jpg. The print ready file is 3.2mb.
And a 100% crop of the file.

My point is, don't stress about the final MB size. Just keep it under 5mb.
And pay no mind to what PS say in that box.

One more thing.
Here are some screen shot that may help describe what I'm talking about:
One number is for TIFF's and one is for JPG's. Although the number for jpg's is not always right on.
