They weren't shooting at her, they shot out a tire to stop a high-speed chase AFTER trying road spikes and failing.
I think they were justified, myself....

A high-speed car pursuit came to an end about 2:30 Sunday afternoon when a DPS trooper shot the right rear tire of a 1993 white Oldsmobile on Treadaway Boulevard near North 17th Street.
| Yes, you don't run for very long from DPS troopers as they will shoot and stop you. They are one of the only departments I know of that are allowed to shoot from and at a moving vehicle. | | | |

It doesnt strike you odd that they shot out her tires? I know Im in TX - land O guns, but it seems insanely crazy to me. Would you want a shoplifter being shot at on your street. btw - shooting at tires and shooting at people - its still shooting. Kids are around, and stupid adults. Accidents happen, which is why they normally dont shoot at shoplifters or chase them.

They weren't shooting because she was a shoplifter, they were shooting to stop a high-speed chase. A high-speed chase is very dangerous....

Hard enough for some people to drive safely at normal speeds, never mind while trying to outrun police cars.

I remember years ago when public schools still taught Drivers Ed. We had a DPS trooper come by to talk to each class. He was showing us his squad car. He then pulled out a .30-30 and said, "You may out run the car but you won't out run this."

As far as the dangers of shooting out tires, yes it is dangerous and they are responsible for each and every bullet that comes out of their weapons, but sometimes it is less dangerous than some idiot driving at high rates of speed. I guarantee if LE stopped chasing people, then there would be a big uproar about that as well. It's a no-win situation.
This article doesn't give enough detail to know whether the shooting was more dangerous than the driving, but until proven wrong I will give DPS the beneift of the doubt. They are very well trained.

Day job for 10 years was a police officer/special agent. 6 years as a firefighter and EMT.
The title of your post is misleading. It got my interest because all of the folks I have worked with in the public safety arena at all levels would not approve of shooting a shoplifting suspect just for shoplifting.
The suspect chose to escalate a misdemeanor to the level she did. PLENTY of opportunity for the suspect to give up. But they did not.
Seems to me you are missing the suspect's responsibility in this scenario. The DPS trooper will have to answer for their actions, and now the suspect hers. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
