Anyone using a Windows Mobile Smartphone? - 03-31-2009, 07:36 AM

I am looking at picking up a phone that runs WM 6.1 today, but I know 6.5 is coming. Anyone with a Smartphone ever upgrade their operating system?

My son's phone is WM. I upgraded its OS once. Pretty simple. Download the file, connect the phone, double click and follow the prompts.

I use the AT&T Fuze (HTC Touch Pro) and love it. There are places where you can load "modified" versions of the OS that run much better than that comes standard. One such place is http://xda-developers.com/. This is my 3rd WM phone and I'm very happy with it. There is also a version on Sprint and some other carriers as well. I like the fact that it has a slide out keyboard. I wasn't too impressed with the on-screen keyboards such as the iPhone.

Yeah, I am getting the Touch Pro on Sprint, hopefully today. My phone has fought valiantly for 5 years and is quickly failing. I thought about trying to hold out for the Palm Pre, or even the Touch Pro 2, but the TP is pretty darn nice.

I have the HTC something or another with Sprint and it is pretty good.

Negatives: the voice dial button is on the side - easy to touch when it is in your pocket or bag. My phone calls everyone on my phone list all the time. Make sure you aren't talking badly about a friend - it may call them.

It is kinda big.

Buttons seem to randomly stop and start working.

Positives: love the keyboard.

It works seamlessly with my Exchange server.

Internet browsing is usually pretty good.

I have had the Samsung Omnia for less than a week, and love it.

Before that, I had a Treo 700wx. I upgraded the Win Mobile SW from 5.x to 6.0 as it seemed to be getting a bit buggy, and it had more problems from day one after that. Email would only send and receive sporadically, system hangs, etc.

Make sure you can go back to the old version if you upgrade.

Man, I need to read the manual on this one. I got the basics working through WiFi and have 3 internet email accounts synced and my work email synced to outlook. I cannot get a WiFi connection at work thanks to all the protective measures and am trying to figure out how to update my email though the cell service instead. I now have an unlimited data plan, so I just need to figure out how to get it to work. I foolishly left the manual at home too....

I'm using a Blackjack II; OS updating is simple.
