Whole Foods - 03-31-2009, 05:41 PM

I like shopping at Whole Foods. If you're careful you can get decent food there. I bought some organic bacon there a few days ago. When I cooked some of it this morning I noticed that it was also labeled "Certified Humane"

Certified Humane? How do you humanely "create" bacon? Ask the hogs permission first? Tell them that "this might sting a bit" just before you drive a stainless steel pin into their brain and then skin and gut them while their heart is still beating? I don't get our labeling practices. Organic is good enough...

That means there is some organization out there justifying their own staff salaries and organizational existence by "certifying" farms.

I couldn't have said it any better myself. Just self-serving marketingspeak.

Maybe they were raised in the most opulent of holding pens prior to slaughter?

I have been to Hippie Foods...Er, I ment Whole foods exactly once. In a pinch needing cat food I decided to check it out. The whole store stank and was bland visually. This was a new store in Lake Wood and they had a cop working security. (somebody going to steal tofu?) The cat food I bought was over priced and to top it off the cat's would'nt eat it. Smart cat's.

You might be right on all accounts, but here in Houston, there is one great thing about Whole Foods.... a lot of VERY ATTRACTIVE women shop there!

Hmm... we usually bleed them out after the bolt gun, then into the scald pot and beater to remove the hair. A little prep work then on to the singletree before gutting them. Put them in the cooler overnight and they cut up so much better. That's how we did it in college.
PETA may have gotten their video out of order.

ROFL... I wouldn't know about PETA... With wild hogs we just skin them at the single tree and they are pretty much dead at that point. We don't have a scald pot and beater available.

I think it sucks that they put a "humane" sticker on bacon. What about the poor lettuce plant? Their heads are ripped off and then further reduced to little slivers of their former selves. Can they not hear their screams? Carrots... tomatoes... oh the humanity... err... plantity... etc...

It's appalling what we do with food
