Gigapan @ TMS - 04-04-2009, 08:51 PM

I tried out the Gigapan robot again today. Here's a link to the final image. As you can see there was a little stitching problem. I'm not sure what caused it, but I have the experts looking into it.

I'll try another one tomorrow, hopefully with all the cars on the grid.

Oh man, that is going to look so good when the stands are filled! The stitching is interesting. I like how David Ragan's car is just floating there.

See you tomorrow!

Approximately how many images is this stitched together and how long of a lens was used?

I'm contemplating getting a gigapan myself.

This was shot with my Canon G9 (point and shoot) and it was made up of 88 images. They are coming out with another model that will take larger P&S cameras, but I like my G9 (and now G10) just fine and it works great with the Gigapan. A cool robot!

DB
Explain how this works.
I see that there is a robot involved. Do you own/rent one or is it available to use at the event?

I own one. You can too! Check out www.gigapan.com for all the details.

It's pretty simple to use and you get a lot of strange looks while you're standing there with your tripod and this box is moving on it's own taking photos.

Here's a photo of mine at TMS.

How long does it take for one of those things to shoot a panorama? I've thought about grabbing one for fun.

It all depends on how many images you are shooting. You tell it the upper left start point and the bottom right start point and it calculates the # of rows and columns and the total # of shots needed. For around 100 shots it will take about 10 minutes. The stitching is where it takes time. It can take an hour to stitch together.

Here's another test shot from Sunday. A little hint is to not try to shoot when everyone is moving around.

Here's 1 more that I shot on Sunday a.m. The batteries ran out half way through, so it's really only half a pan, but you get the idea.

So I'm guessing you don't have any control or editing capabilities as the panorama is being built?

When you go look, zoom in dead center on the stage area and you can see a whole bunch of drivers waiting to be introduced. You can clearly make out Jeff Gordon, JR, Kasey, Bobby Labonte, Harvick, Juan Pablo and many others...

The zooming detail is the true power of this device. It's just fantastic!

You are correct. It will convert the entire pano into RAW format and then you can edit, but it is a HUGE file (as high as 1 GIG). You are correct, the zoom is the big plus and you can also get wall (or side of building) size prints.

It takes a while, but you can set it to run while you are going to bed, right?

That's pretty amazing. Not sure how I could incorporate it into my business model, but I'll be trying to figure something out.....
